Most won't... BMW doesn't really publish detailed change logs to the dealerships on what's changed from ISTA/P version to ISTA/P version. Unless it's contains a fix to a critical issue that the service techs need to be aware of.

Its always a variation of software changes. Would be tough for any tech or service advisor to know exactly what it consist of.
But, the modules need to be updated in the "vehicle order".
So you may get more then just a ECU update depending on the current software version of the remaining modules in your vehicle

I do not know how the opening of a ECU to perform flash is different from a standard ODB port software flash in the regards to being able to be overwritten.
I do believe that yes, the software will be over written.

Once the BMW computer is plugged into your vehicle, it will pull up a report showing all control modules and which ones are out of date with software versions.
Then the BMW computer will program all modules in the correct sequence.

If you have access to an Autologic with an independent shop, you can select to program individual control modules and you wouldn't have to go to the dealer for this.

Thanks, should be interesting to see when a ECU Flash needs a Software Update to the car.

Also I noticed in my last Dealer visit they reprogrammed the car but my side amber delete coding didn't go away which is great, but all my other codings did so maybe the ECU Bench Flash will still remain.

I would recommend contacting who programed your ECU what they would say. I'm pretty positive that your ECU file will be overwritten.
Individual coding for lights etc, are coded to a specific module.
Everything would have to do with what modules are being updated.

It depends if the software update includes an update to the DME module (Engine Control Unit).

The vehicle is made up of *many* different ECU units. Updating from one ISTA/P version to another may only update a subset of those ECU's and not touch others.

Called SA and he wants to charge $255 for software updates on a car still under warranty... Does this sound reasonable?

He also said that if the software damages anything that I would have to pay for it as it is not covered by warranty.... This just sounds way off.

Exactly.

Certain modules are almost always updated with every release, and some are not. The DME and Trans are usually only updated on major releases, whereas modules like CAS are updated in many sub releases.

So it all comes down to the software currently loaded in the car. If you have a 12 or 13 that's never seen an update, expect all feature programming/tuning etc to be gone. If you have a 14 or 15, many of the modules will already be on a later version and may not be overwritten.
