Braking Performance
One area where I'm a bit worried about the M5 is the braking performance. This is something I have ignored initially and after watching numerous reviews and reading several performance metrics, I see that the 4300 lbs weight takes its toll on the braking distances.
I see that the competition package M5, from 60 mph, stops in 106-107 ft whereas the current M3, with the competition package, stops in 99-100 ft (note : the new M3 will probably better than this). I want to ask the owners, what is your take? Is this a problem in daily driving? Do you have any issues with braking? How does it compare with the M3 and the previous M5? Thanks. |

Dude, you sure ask a lot of questions. Lol!
Anyways, we're happy to answer them. Standard steel brakes are very very good. The 6 pots up front are very strong. I've driven the M5 at the track and at the M Performance school. The M5 stops very well despite its weight. The CCB's are even better!

I thought CCBs only improved brake fading and didnt improve braking distance though, can someone confirm? |

Speaking about brakes, I do not understand why M put that crappy looking (is it 1 piston?) floating calipers on the rear discs. They really look bad. Because of the imperfect metal it looks like a horrible paint job.
Why couldn't they put another set of (6 piston?) fixed calipers on the rear like they are on the front?

In this section you can't compare stopping distance due to their weight differences. Two different cars.

I find the brakes remarkable. Whenever I let someone drive the car, the first comment is on the power and the second is always on how well the brakes reign her in.

brakes for daily driving are not an issue and feel fine.
brakes at the track become obvious very quickly that fade is an issue. I plan to retry the track with hawk dtc 30s to see if the fade improves.

I dont track my cars so this is not a problem for me. I think any M car will have the same problem though unless you have CCBs.

I handled the CCB rotors and I was shocked how light they are: lift with one finger. Better/ lighter wheels + CCB = nice unsprung weight savings. |

If BMW couldn't fit e brake then they should of kept the standard pull brake lever like they had in the E60 M5. It was simple and made sense. Not a fan of e-brake.

OP, if u are never gonna track your M5 in future, there is absolutely no concern in the braking department. I retrofitted the CCB on my M5, but mostly for cosmetic reason and to rid myself of those nasty brake dusts. Stock brakes are very good and nobody should be complaining about them unless taking it to the track. Now I have to deal with brake squeal with the CCB

Actually, it squeals when warmed. The car is mostly used in city driving, so mostly low speed braking.

I have test driven the M5 again today, for the 4th time! This was mostly for braking, which was something I didn't properly test before. I can tell you that compared to my good old E90 M3, the braking is really not that great. At 40-50 mph, if I slam the brakes, the car takes a lot longer to stop than my M3 and the difference is extremely visible and made me very uncomfortable. Yes in city driving with casual turns, it is acceptable, but if you really want to drive the car hard, 4300 lbs shows its weight and it is quite noticeable.
Now remember that what I am comparing this car against is a 2011 model M3, the new M3 is lighter and has much better brakes and tires, so the difference will most likely be more pronounced. That being said, if anyone drives the M5 the way I did today, they probably have bought the wrong car to begin with. I think they are two totally different cars. So don't take what I said the wrong way. |
