Tourbillion, I'm in the same shape as you completed 7/5 and on it's way to port.

Seems like I'm going to go and study the tread on how to track the ship crossing the ocean.

Well I'm not the CFO of BMW...... but I do make my living advising CFO's.
I would highly question why a CFO would allow that much in capital assets and working capital to sit idle in a port just to satisfy some marketing’s guys plan. The plant and working capital should have been used to build car I could sell the next day.

Also if I was a dealer I would be a little grumpy about showing my banker inventory in august (you BMW Corp. is going to want to book the sale in August)not being able to book my dealer sale until September.

.... Ever been at a dealer near months end?

So what I’m I missing?

I believe it falls under their q3, the end of September. Regardless I agree with you. The only thing I can think of is they may plan for a buffer should they have issues with import or the Moroney document.

There is also potential risk to the capital assets plus the cost to carry the insurance should anything happen while waiting for transport

Wonder if it's going on a separate ship due to POE

I has heard this initially too but since corrected myself. Sounds like it may be true, although doesn't make sense...

A month or two ago, Audi was holding the 2013 S4 and S5 cars at the port, not shipping them to dealers until the release date. Those weren't special orders, though.

Another thing is EPA testing. I haven't seen EPA fuel economy test results for the M5. I don't think the cars can be sold until that testing happens. The sticker can't be finalized, it's unknown if a gas guzzler tax needs to be collected, etc.

According to my salesman, the first dozen or so cars that arrive in the US may be delayed a few days in order for the EPA to do the necessary testing and set the gas guzzler tax, if any. Just prey your car issn't one of the first to make landfall!!

I would assume BMW will give the EPA different cars for the testing - not customer cars...

Although nothing would surprise me anymore in the crazy world of US car sales where new cars are routinely used as demos for customer test drives, joy rides for dealership employees, messed with in showrooms, left with the hood open all day to show the engine, lifted in unnatural angles (SUV's and trucks), and abused in all kinds of other ways.

I would have thought that too. Use the dealer demo models for EPA testing and not customer cars.

Not sure there's such a thing as a "dealer demo" in general, and particularly considering that dealers sold all their early M5 allocations.

Also, the first cars to arrive are likely to be customer cars anyway (those cars get the highest production priority.)

I think there's a real concern here for US-delivery cars with a July production date, or even August if you ordered manual transmission. I'd be particularly concerned with manual because there will be very few of those.

I'm sure the EPA guys will have some fun "testing" these cars

Build a bridge and get over it dude. When you have something positive to contribute with your 59 posts over the past 2.5 years then provide that so called enjoyment for the forum members. Go ahead and get the last word. I dont need to spend any more time dignifying your flippant and presumptuous comments.
