Because a wet skidpad is designed exactly to do what they did, allow controlled drifts.
Kinda like saying you set a landspeed record but did it all downhill. You may have still set the record, but the conditions greatly contributed to your ability to do it. |

I don't see tires lasting 51 miles on a dry skidpad (overheating). Distance is distance, no matter the conditions. Quote:
It would be like discrediting someone because they ran 20 hours straight on a treadmill versus outside. |

Just an observation -- it is interesting to note that apparently the standard metal brakes were used instead of the carbon fiber brakes which are now offered on M5's.

I'd be surprised if the M School cars ended up outfitted with carbon ceramics just because of the cost -- but I'm pretty sure on a drift run you'd never touch the brakes at all, so it wouldn't really matter in this particular case.

What was the car used to set the previous record in Abu Dhabi

To me this is a testament to the driver more than the car. Being able to keep it drifting for that long ... damn. |

Drifting for 2+ hours while 95% of drivers can't even hold a drift for 3 seconds is a testament to the driver, regardless of whether on a dry or wet skid pad

Wet makes it easier to slide, not easier to drift. Completely different things (as anyone who's done the driving schools at the Performance Center can attest to). Johann was an instructor at our school as well. Awesome job by a great guy! |

I have been on that skid pad with the same car and I agree with other posters, it is not easy to just drift away, easier to do 360s though.....
Johan is a cool guy, laid back, a great instructor, and a great driver. I am happy to see that he got it done! |

It's not uncommon to left-foot-brake during a drift; especially on a long drift. Not saying you'd come anywhere close to needing carbon ceramic brakes. It's probably the opposite, really. Carbon ceramic brakes don't work as well and are less consistent until they're up to temperature. It is interesting to watch the footwork needed to hold one of these long drifts though.

That is crazy. I am glad it's a BMW. But how do these tires even hold up to such abuse! I am impressed.
Can't wait to see highlights of the video. How long did it take?

Johan Schwartz
Johan drifted 51 miles and after all that, he was nice enough to give most of us all a hot lap around the track in a M3, most people wouldn't of taken that time after breaking a record.

Yeah. Its definitely not easy. I did the 2 day M school with the board members back in April and had the opportunity to try that same skid pad in an M3 (much easier, lighter, better accelerator control, shorter in length) and that was tough. As soon as you get a drift going you have to feel for accelerator feed, steering correction, and road feed back. And to make it harder there are imperfections in the road. There were only two or three of us out of a group of about 15 that could sustain a drift. Johan is definitely very talented, no questions or doubts about it. Could he have done it in another car? Yes.. Probably be a lot easier on him too. The more horsepower the easier it is to spin out, so for him to do it in an m5 s63tu is pretty frikin amazing if you ask me.

Those who say this isn't impressive, why don't you go and break some record and see how long that takes.
