Remember the E60 M5's analog RPM limit indicator? I wish they had the same thing on our F10 M5's..

Just noticed they reintroduced it, but in digital form, on the new M3/M4. It doubles as shift lights.

It would be nice if we had either the analog or digital - just a cool feature. Anyways, thought it was smart of BMW M to double the shift lights as cold rpm limit indicator

It is on our cars if you have HUD and put the HUD in "M" mode. Just saying. (it is colourful)

Yeah we do have shift lights on HUD. But it doesn't double as cold engine rev limit indicator.

It almost doesn't matter anyways. The ECU on the M5 will only let you rev up to about 6,000rpm even when the engine is warmed up anyways.

Some people say that. I can rev my car as high as I want in Neutral, like my E60 M5.

Wait a sec... The engine won't rev past 6k????? But it makes it's peak power closer to 7k, right?

Please elaborate.

He's talking about free revving the motor in neutral.

Yes, and this goes for both sitting still and moving.

My E92 M3 had that and that's one thing I miss. The M5 takes so damn long to warm up it would be nice to know where the rev limits are as it is coming up to temperature.

I think someone here mentioned that was part of a recent software update.

I agree. On the 2 mile drive to the office the temp gauge doesn't move, so I keep the revs low to be conservative. On my E46 M3 the max rev indicator started moving up pretty quick after takeoff, even though the engine still wasn't at full operating temp.

Bear in mind that the gauge in the F10 M5 is Oil Temp, the E46 M3 was water temp, water temp rises far quicker than the oil temp will

If you switch to German Castrol 0W-30 (versus OEM 0W-50) the car warms up faster, and is motor is slightly more quiet during idle.

Defiantly must be some sort of software change. It's unbelievable that BMW M put a free rev restriction on some M5's (whatever s/w update it was).

I always bitch about some of the changes BMW M made from E to F generations. The E60 M5 was a drivers car through and through. The F10 is still a drivers car, but they decided to make the DCT act more like a conventional automatic (with introduction of "creep mode"), they put a rev restriction on the motors, etc. Then they take backwards steps in some areas.. like putting a lame set of shift paddles on the wheel (versus E60's illuminated paddles that were nice and "clicky")..

The F10 M5 is still a great car, and I think it's still by far the best performance sedan in the market - but if BMW M carried over some of the key features and cool features/tech that made everyone love the E60 M5, it would be that much better of a car. It's like hit and miss from E to F.. add some nice stuff, forget to keep some nice stuff. Annoying..

Has anyone been able to free rev without restriction, brought their car to the dealer, and then noticed the change (restriction)? If so does your service invoice/receipt hint at what did it?

I have my first oil service due soon. I was going to ask my dealer to update my M5's NBT head unit so I can get the on-screen volume and other new features. But this makes me hesitant.

i will almost guarantee there is a boost restriction on the motor until a certain oil temp is reached like most bmw turbo engines.. But otherwise, keep the revs low until the car warms up, esp if your tuned.
