New M5 questions and Observations
Getting acquainted with my 7sp DC transmission.. Question: Can you over-rev the car? Or does in intervene like an automatic?
4 days with the car and already got a warning from a cop at the Lincoln Tunnel that I "better get that front plate on the car ASAP". I am going to go have them drill the $3 black plastic mount into my front end tomorrow. Not worth bringing even more attention to myself. But it just sucks. There has been some talk in this forum about coding the car to close the trunk.. My car closes the trunk with the "foot" feature. There is a pussified "beep beep beep" (think backup warning on a dump truck), but it does close automatically. Not sure if everyone is aware. Active sound is cool, but def sounds artificial and would rather it be gone. Oh, and I am getting a lot of thumbs up from teenagers on the street! HAHA So far so good with 500 miles on the clock. I am amazed how different the M5 is from my F10 550. One would think its just the next step up, but the driving dynamics, etc, are just totally different and much better. The few things I really hated about my 550 are resolved in this car making it perfect. Love it so far and very happy with my color choices (like many of us I struggled with this). Worth every one of those millions of pennies to drive this thing! |

In manual mode it will not automatically up shift for you. It will just let you bounce off of the limiter.
However, on down shift, the computers will not allow a shift that would grenade the engine. So, you got that goin' for ya, which is nice.

When I was in my 20's, in the 90's, I remember standing in Park Ave BMW next to a kid my age who had just blown up the engine on his new 95 M3 with a downshift. Don't hold me to it, but I think it was like $15K in damage back then (on a $40K car)!~ I like to think I am not an idiot (at least I think so), but I would much rather the car get in the way of me blowing it up accidentally. This whole "it's an automated manual"/"No, it's an automatic" stuff gets confusing. After a few days with the car, it's an automatic. Period. |

It's not an automatic. It's a dual clutch manual transmission (with several electronic nannies to stop people from damaging the engine, claiming it wasn't their fault and then trying to sue BMW).

But I put it in drive and go. When I shut the car off, it's in park.
In my book, it's an automatic. YES, a very whizzbang, eff'ing amazing automatic, but an automatic nonetheless. Maybe technically something different, but it is what it is. Hit the gas and it shifts. Stop at a light and put your foot on the brake. Stop on an incline and just tap the gas and go! It's an automatic! LOL |

Is the gas tank bigger in the M5 than my previous F10 550? Sure as hell seems like it. Took a bunch of loot to fill it today.

Evidently the tank size was a source of complaints for the old M5. For the new M5, BMW went back to a metal tank. The thinner metal wall allowed for increased amount of fuel compared to regular 5 series vehicles which all use a molded plastic tank.

Yeah, it cuts power, but it's generous. I can't imagine that if it allowed you to remain at those revs much longer it would be good for your engine.

What I am worried about is this: I don't drive drunk, ever, but I might have a couple glasses of wine with dinner or meet the guys for a beer after work. In NNJ or NYC they WILL stop you for not having the plate every time they notice. Then the question comes: "had anything to drink tonight"? Say no, you are lying and they start the process. Say yes, and they start the process anyway. I just don't need that crap as just one example. Why invite the problem.......42 years old; too old to be bothered. |

Stop on an incline and before you start driving again release the brake without hitting the gas. Please be careful, the car will start rolling back on its own like a MT. Again, please be careful! |

No, it doesn't cut power, it cuts fuel. When you hit the rev limiter it cuts the fuel supply to the engine until the revs go below the limit. Then it restores the flow of fuel. Technically, you could run the car on the limiter all day and it wouldn't have any long term damage. Pretty sure the DCT has the Hill Assist feature, so the car shouldn't start rolling backwards on a hill for at least 5 seconds.

Right!?!? It just bothered this guy that I didn't have the plate on the car. Who are these people anyway? He directed me out of the line of traffic and just warned me with a grin on his face. Worse, its the same guys there all the time in the AM. They will be ticketing me every day. LOSER!
I'm not a LEO but I know many of them. These people are the ones who enforce the laws set by lawmakers. If you think the law is stupid (and it very well may be) blaming Police Officers or calling them LOSERS is an elitist attitude. Enjoy your M5. |

Every NJ State and County Police officer should be immediately ordered out of the bushes on the NJTPK and into the hood in Newark to stop the civil war that's going on there. We have bigger issues than license plates. Elitist or not, the guy was a jerk. If anyone was being elitist it was him, not me. I was just trying to get to work to pay his salary. |
