Break-In secrets
I have been using this method for years and I know a lot of people are against it, but here is the info.

Drive it hard especially during the first 20 miles? Really?
And you've been doing this with your cars for how long? Goes contrary to what we've traditionally been taught, but anything's possible. Expecting arrival of '14 M5 in 3-4 weeks, but don't think I'd have the cahones to try this break in.

I have done this with my past 2 bimmers. My current m3 I did this (minus the using non-synthetic oil) but I drove it hard from day 1 and started taking to full redline within 400 miles. I have never used even a drop of oil since than in 50k miles and I redline the car 10 times a day and drive it like I stole it. Usually that would really burn oil and almost every other m3, older m5 and older m3's burn oil however majority of people follow the "break-in" procedure.
My engine runs as strong as ever and still uses not a drop of oil. So I will certainly stick with this method for every car. |

Years and years ago a bike mag took 2 Honda Fire Blades. Bike 1 run in as recommended. Bike 2 nailed from the word go.
Bike 2 made a good bit more power Not sure if that article is still on the go as that was prob 15 years ago.

I've used this technique on both my E60 and my current F10 M5s. All three have run strong with lower than average oil consumption.

This works, Iv'e taken my m5 up to 155MPH during the break in and drove it hard. Iv'e had people tell me my M5 is much faster then others. Also, Other members have done this as well and have had the best Dyno numbers.

I searched for ages but can't find the Fireblade stuff. I thought maybe the article would have made it into the net by now.

It is very important to do wide open throttle pulls and decelerrate in gear from mile 1 if you prefer hard break in. It's not about driving at the speed limit, but going up and down in the full rpm range and not holding rpms at a high steady position. The car won't last you 300k miles as the one with recommended break in would, but it will generate more power.

Nearly there. 1150 miles. Running in the chicken way as it says in the book. More worried about the warranty being void if I nail it. Getting fedup now though. Service on Thursday in Edinburgh. Fuel wise I really struggle I live in the sticks. I use gleaner supreme locally, which is delivered by shell not sure what it is though and shell nitro when I am in Aberdeen

If it matters any.. I drove cross-country when I first bought my BMW, came back home with 7k miles - I drove it hard, hit speed limiter at around 300 miles. Full throttle hitting red line on D3, engine wise.. Everything is fine w/ mine.

I would like to break in as you did but dont want to do this early on in the engine and then drive around for another 1200 miles.

I have some family that lives there and they brought me oil and filter and had it changed at a local dealer. Make sure you request a simple oil change and no typical break in procedure.

Don't think you need to use regular oil for break in and no need to baby it either.
I thought someone here took a ED and he asked the BMW engineer who prepped his car how he should break in the engine and the engineer told him just to drive however he likes it. |
