Interesting outcome, this is one reason I never tune cars because they're still street cars made for normal DD driving. M cars will never be reliable for hard driving, or track driving. Too many consumable parts will fail, and the upkeep will be very expensive.

Thanks for the candid posts OP. I myself had broached the idea of water injection via Aquamist with my SA; he quietly shook his head lol.

UPDATE: Carmax ended up auctioning the vehicle as is - a local dealership purchased it last summer and has been trying to sell it ever since. They even took it to my friend's BMW dealership where the techs confirmed that motor needed to be replaced. All I can say is GLWS...

From that video it sounded like the the knock went away when you rev it up. It might just be a bad injector.

What a heartbreaking noise that is! as we all listen for knocks/clicks/hisses/whines etc etc without ever actually wanting to hear them! that must of been a terrible 150mile journey home you did....
Glad you managed to offload it |

When i first bought my ///M it had a rod knock and got it replaced at 64-65k and it was stage 2 tuned. Since being replaced i have downgraded and stayed with the simple BMS Stage 1 tune on 3.0 setting over stock boost. That is really about as far as you can push it. BMS is probably the weakest of all stage 1 tunes as its a cheap basic piggyback tune. Bootmod stage 1, ESS or any other stage 1 tune is going to pull more power then the BMS stage 1. A few things to help avoid rod bearing failure..
1. Let Vehicle warm up 2-3 minutes before driving it. 2. Let the oil temp gauge get to the first dot before taking it over 3,000 RPM 3. Use consistent Oil. Try not to change brands/viscosity 4. Let the car cool down at idle after being driven hard 5. Dont beat the shi* out of the car. As clearly stated, the M5 cannot be driven extremely hard as compared to other performance cars. You buy and M5 for a reason so it really makes no sense to buy it and be too scared to get on it. Just be sensible and limit the tuning and upgrades. Anytime you launch the car just realize you are shortening the life span of parts dramatically. Be smart if you dont want the big bill in the end *Any conclusion to of the OP video was a rod knock? |
