Question: Two types of vehicle start-up(???)

I've noticed when looking at saabkyle04's review videos wherein one car has a long exhaust start-up sound while the other one has a very short start-up sound.

To further illustrate, let's post the videos.

Here's the long start-up that most of us are familiar with it:


But when I see and hear this one on the M6 GC (at 2:46 onwards)


WTF just happened. Where's the rumble and grumble? The engine didn't 'choke' (is that term?) in that M6 GC vid........compared to the one in the M5 vid.

So what's the deal here? Any explanation?

Does it depend on how long or short the person holds the Start/Stop Button before release?

Any ideas and thoughts here?

In the case of BMW M5/M6, how exactly does this work? And what kind of operating parameters and outside factors are needed so that you can get a longer exhaust sound?

Also is this dependent on the weather/climate in a given area? How will this apply in places that are hot and humid? (i.e. Middle East or South East Asia?)

c'mon guys
we need these threads in community to have smile on our faces

whenever engine is cold you get cold start, engine needs to be off for 1.5-2hours after it has reached operating temperature to get cold start

You are also comparing the sound from the rear of the car with the way it sounds inside the cabin.

You wont get it when its warm. It doesnt need to do the long startup; all the lines and systems are still primed.
The car also has the auto stop/start feature for traffic -- it needs to have the fast startup when you are sitting in traffic, the light turns green and you take your foot of the brake -- you expect the car to GO right now, not later.

Thanks for the responses.

Although it is kinda strange because at the start of that M6 GC vid, the car was able to do that long start-up.

In fact, I think during that initial start-up, the vehicle was able to 'choke' its engine for a longer duration (possibly around 2 seconds) then after that you could hear the strong grumble from the exhaust.

But at 2:46, after Kyle pressed the Engine Start/Stop button, the engine didn't choke for very long. Possibly even less than a second. And there was no loud grumble at all.

Also this takes into consideration that both cars have the same stock exhaust system so apples to apples.

The way I understand it, my suspicion is that I guess there is no 'fixed time duration' with how the vehicle chokes its engine during an initial start-up procedure. My guess and hypothesis (after studying these videos) is that vehicle systems of the M5/M6 will only apply the minimum required amount of 'engine choking' based on current engine operating parameters.

I guess the statement made by 'mstmng' makes sense....in that in order to get the longest engine choke as well as the loudest start-up grumble, then the car must be fully switched off for at least 1.5-2 hours before turning the car on.

I think I understand it now..........I hope

Look at the temp gauge - the car was almost to full operating temp and well above what we would consider "cold start".

No loud grumble because the recording was being made from inside the cabin and there is a ton of sound insulation.

Every time he revs the engine in all cars, Saab Kyle ensures that the engine temperature is always warmes up to operating temperature. Shows respect to the dealerships/owners.

So yea, most likely the start up is not a true cold start.
