5600 lbs!!!

I know this is the M5 forum, but many of us who had or have a M5 used to have a 550. Did you know that the 2014 550xi weighs 5600 lbs! I thought it was a typo at first until I took a look at the 550i, which was only 199 lbs lighter. Both weigh substantially more than a new X5 xdrive, 750 LI xdrive and a freakin' Jeep Cherokee!!! I know we are nation of fat ssess, but good lord...

We all talk about the weight of the F10 M5, but just imagine trying to do some spirited driving in the new 550 despite the 45 HP and 80 ft/lbs TQ increase for 2014. No bueno. Also, I know that BMW will do a lot in the next generation to reduce the weight of the M5 (hopefully similar to the M4 proposed specs), but as they consider making an AWD version they will have to REALLY reduce the weight in order to compensate for AWD.

What manufacturers currently do this? I may be wrong but I have never seen that.

Are you sure you aren't looking at the Gross Vehicle Weight? That weight shows the weight of the vehicle fully loaded with gas, passengers (150lbs each X the number of maximum occupants) and I believe whatever the maximum payload is designated for the trunk or cargo area. Needless to say on a 5 passenger car like the 550 it will be over 1,000lbs more than the curb weight of the vehicle itself.

I think he's mistaking the Gross Vehicle weight for the unladen weight. If the GVWR is 5,600 on the 2014 550xi, then it would be 4,600lbs unladen, which is still heavy and heavier than a 550i due to the AWD of the xi.

With regard to "how do I know this": http://www.edmunds.com/car-news/2014...-revealed.html

With regard to other manufacturers, I'm not sure I was clear or you read it the wrong way, but I'll take the blame for not being clear. What I was saying is that it seems AWD systems add weight. Since one of the main complaints about the M5 is it seems heavy, then they will have to address weight concerns even more if they offer an AWD version. That's all...

The 550xi does NOT weigh 5600lbs!

What you are referring to is the stated GWVR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating). GWVR is the maximum permissible weight of the car with passengers and luggage, as stated by the manufacturer.

The 550ix has a curb weight of 4300lbs
The 550i has a curb weight of 4200lbs

So, X-drive adds 100lbs.

Curb weight is ready to drive with 90% fuel and driver.

OP may also have confused a normal 550 with a dinan stage 5 550, which is known to add approx 1400 lbs of raw, m5 killing power. Yep. Fact.

FACT?

I personally have a very different experience. My buddy and I went to out local dealer. We both know everyone there very well. He took the Dinan Stage 5 550i and I followed in the F12 M6 cab.

From a dig: M6 wins
Slow roll: M6 wins
60 mph highway rolls: M6 wins
80 mph highway rolls: M6 wins
Handling: Total joke. M6 blew it away.

Now, knowing that my F10 M5 was actually faster than my M6 cab, I don't see where this fact really works out?

Curb weight: 4145 lbs. Saw it listed on specs on line. Seems low. Boss330 probably correct.

My source was www.bmw.de which obviously lists EU spec weights. Normally very similar weights to US, but sometimes differ with regards to with or without driver and how much fuel onboard.

The stated EU weights was with 90% fuel and driver
