"Engine temp -- Drive Moderately" What the...
Driving a 2013 M5 with 15K miles on it. Never saw this warning before. Was driving very mellow for about 25-30 miles. Parked the car for about 30 mins, then when I started her back up, this message popped up. Obviously, something's up with the coolant system.
Anyone ever seen this message? ...when driving mellow and NOT beating on it? Called my SA and taking it in on Monday. Concerned.

I got the same message a month or so back. I drove for about 10 minutes stopped for an errand and when I started the car back up the message came up. It was -5C outside and oil temp was below normal.
Error went away when I re-started the car and hasn't come up since. I didn't bother with a service appointment. |

By chance was the ambient temperature low? I've seen this message twice and both times were when I was in a cold environment and driven just enough to begin to warm up the fluids before shutting it off. Upon return, message appeared. Last time was a few days ago, so popped the hood and felt around. Everything that's usually hot was ice cold except for the metal coolant lines.
I think it's just a reminder that the car has cooled well below normal operating temps. |

I've gotten the coolant alert, if I'm not mistaken coolant shrinks when it's very cold out. If that's the reason it should correct itself.

This isn't really about the coolant level being low or not. For those who had E39, E46, E60, or E9x ///M cars (and those who didn't for that matter) should remember the variable redline limiter that adjusted based on fluid temperatures. Apparently several lawsuits were filed and the feature no longer available or implemented. This "warning" is just what is put in place of instead. For whatever reason it only appears when the ambient temp is low and the oil filter bypass valves have closed and are then again opened within 30mins approx.

S63 has oil filter bypass valves that activate when the oil temp/ambient temp is below a certain point to ensure proper lubrication of critical components. |
