The trap speed on the M5 is 122.5 mph . If they could get traction at launch like the e63 it would run a 11.6 guaranteed.

Funny how everyone points out all the flaws and complains about the M5 but it's always the choice that most (not all) all fall back to.

Didn't Motor Trend say that car was so heavy even though it weighs 340 pounds less than the E63S……

With that trap speed 12.0 can't be anywhere near the best it can do and I think the E9x M3 was capable of low 12s.

Obviously it was built with the 'ring in mind and not the 1/4 mile but that can't be a very good representation of what it can do.

There's board members here who have hit the 11.7 first time out on a track with a bone stock M5, most can get their car sub 12.0 no problem... I personally think the 1/4 mile times for the M5 in this comparison are way conservative or driver error.

Additionally, take a look at the 0-60 vs. 5-60 times. AWD helps the others so their 0-60's are faster than the M5, but the in the 5-60 the M5 crushes all... and continues accelerate.

It's tough to compare the prepped surface at an actual drag strip to the surfaces mags typically use. That alone easily explains the diff between 11.7 and 12.0 for a powerful, traction limited RWD.

who cares about these speeds, these cars are never tracked and those that are are coded and limiters removed.

living in NY you are suicidal to drive anywhere near those speeds
///M is for Madness... but then again you wouldn't know, only 3 stripes you've seen is on your M kit.

This has always been my favourite car segment, big handsome storming luxo barges that have no right to be this fast.

Personally I would settle quite happily into the seat of an E63S Estate. Imagine a traffic light drag with the family and labradors on board and seeing the look on the GT3 owners face as you lazily kept pace.

And you have room for the GT3 passengers to take refuge in your car when theirs catches fire..

That could be true. However, if it is, the same can be said for the E63-S, RS7, etc.

For example, I haven't seen the C63 break 12.2 seconds in the 1/4 mile in the hands of auto journalists. However, I know folks that have routinely accomplished sub-12 second runs in stock cars.

Ultimately, while the numbers are fun to look at for the die-hard enthusiasts, the majority of folks buying these luxury super sedans are using them for daily driving purposes only.

I prefer rwd cars, but on the same note I prefer smaller more agile cars as well. But when I get older and I become more interested in a big sedan as a street car. A freeway missile is what I would want and stop light racer. So for me personally I would take an awd car. I would never track any of these overweight cars, so rwd in this segment does nothing for me.

RWD in the M5 is amazing and I wouldn't trade it for any of these other overweight AWD alternatives. Being able to kick the tail out at will in a low speed corner - priceless..
