Oil top up required at 1,200km - normal?

I was a little surprised this morning to get an alert to add one litre of engine oil considering I'm still running the car in. Fortunately, I was driving past my dealer at the time so it was easily fixed.

Anyone else had this so early in the life of the car?

Yes, I top up 1 liter of oil every 1000-1200 kilometers, I have so far topped it up 6 times at about 7800 km. Don't know if it's acceptable at all, but they should've added it to fuel consumption or something.

This does sound a bit odd.

On the 550i (similar engine) several forum members have had similar oil burn rates. However on my 550i, I have only lost 1/5 of 1 quart in 5300 miles (i.e. it is still close to the max level and nowhere near the min level where you need to add a quart).

If my M5 had this level of oil burn, I'd be concerned about sludge.

Yep. Same here. I had to top up a liter at 1250 ks.

My wife's X5 with the N63 uses a liter of oil every 1500 ks - I have lost track of how much oil I have added in 23000 ks. I keep a liter in the boot all the time.

I guess for us doing the ED, we better bring along a liter or 2 of oil. What grade of oil were you told to put on the M5, 0W-30 or 5W-30 Regular or Synthetic?

Looking at what E90Fleet says in another post this may well have been the wrong oil. Seems like you are closer to the mark than what my useless SA said. I am now going to go and find out what oil they put in it when they did the 2000k service on the car. They had better have put the correct oil in it.

I haven't reached that distance yet about another week or so but my wifes X5M needed a litre of oil at 1800 km and 3 x since then. She has about 25000 km on the vehicle. It seemed with her vehicle that the oil usage went away around 15000 km. lets hope its the same for our cars.

Oil consumption vs F10 M5

My F10 M5 was delivered at the end of March, 2012. Here at Hungary/Europe BMW uses Castrol Edge 5W30 or 5W40.
During the first 2300km I had more than 0.75liter oil consumption with normal brake in drive.
I have changed the oil and oil filter at 2.300 km, and switched to Motul 300V Power 5W40. Between 2.300 km and 4.900 km (spirited and sometimes hard drive, but no more than 190km/h were included) the oil consumption was 0,3liter. With Motul 5W40, the oil consumption is less than Castrol Edge, however there is some. The egnine and hone was designed to support better oil filming, but as a sideeffect it has much stronger oil consumption.

On a side note: i also have an e92 335i (N54). With Castrol Edge 5W30, my oil consumption was almost 1 liter during my oil change interval (10K), but when i have switched to Motul 300W Power 5W40, my oil consumption was almost zero up to my 7K-10K change intervall.

On my F10 i plane to change oil every 7K when using Motul 300V as this kind of oil has more limted lifetime than longlife oils. But on the other hand it does much better for my engine.

Done 4,000 km, no oil consumption yet. At least, the car hasn't told me to add any oil yet.

After service at 2000km, I´ve only topped up with 1L one time. It was at 5000km.

Oil consumption is normal of turbo charged engines, I had a 2010 750i and I had to top it up every 3,000 Km and the same thing with my 2007 997 Turbo, I suggest to always carry a quart of oil in the trunk just in case.

That is way too much oil on a new car. Something is not right - have the dealer check it out.

Normal Oil Consumption

From my perspective I'd be more concerned about an engine that doesn't consume oil than one that does. If you want a car that doesn't consume oil buy a Lexus. If you want a HIGH performance engine you should expect some oil consumption. If everything fits so tight that no oil is consumed that means more friction and heat. In my race car I go through about a quart a day on a recently rebuilt engine build to racing specs.

In addition to my F10 M5 I also own an E39 M5 that I've owned since 1999 (Nov 1999 build). The E39 has consumed about 1 liter of the 10W-60 oil just about every 1,200 miles since day one. In the beginning I asked both BMW NA and BMW AG and they both said that was normal. For a while they changed the piston and ring design and went with 10W-30 oil because so many people "freaked-out" about the consumption. Customers ended up with less oil consumption but not necessarily a better engine.

My Porsche 911, that I owned for 10 years, stated in the owner's manual normal oil consumption was a quart every 600 miles; and it was.

Top off with 1 Liter Oil

I finally got my 1-liter oil top off message at 6500 miles. Luckily, I still have that 1 Liter BMW 0W40 Oil I bought at the BMW Welt in Munich during ED -- hope a year since buying it did not make it stale. I poured it in during office lunch time and the ! indicator signifying to add the oil went right after I turned on the engine. Next is the usual 1-year service at the dealer which I believe involves entire oil/filter change.
