Costs and Necessity of extended maintenance plan and service plans

My 4year/50k bumper to bumper ends next year, so I have started looking to extend that for 6years/100k as I intend to keep my car for around 6-8 years. What I have found out right now is that one needs 3 plans and it gets very costly. Extending the car's regular service (oil service, etc.), runs over $3k, and to cover the car's mechanicals (both through BMW) runs over an additional $5k, but does not cover Nav and electrical issues, which is a separate contract not offered by BMW. Just wondering what others are being quoted, and what others are considering (aside from getting a new car) once their original warranty/service coverage expires. Thanks.

It's been a while, but BMW should offer different tiers of extended warranty protection starting with a basic power train warranty and up to include navigation/audio system coverage (platinum level)

When I had my e60 M5, I opted to extend both the maintenance and warranty and got a discount when purchasing both together. I found it well worth the investment since it paid for itself, and then some.

My car is CPO so I am fine with the warranty part, but the maintaince plans I've heard different opinions. Some think it's too much for some oil changes and minor stuff. Not sure if I want to drop 3k, but I have till 10/2017 to decide...

8k for warranties that do not include electrical? Yeesh I think we're better off just trading them in.

I'm just over 48,000 miles on my M5 at the moment. I went ahead and bought an extended warranty from BMW that has the platinum coverage. So navigation and all the electronics are covered as well. Paid $5,700 for it before taxes. I opted to not buy the extended maintenance plan, seeing how the most expensive thing with the maintenance was the brake change. You could probably get away with paying around $3,000 for a full set of new pads and rotors without the labor costs from the dealer and they wanted over $4,000 for the extended maintenance plan, but since I just installed brand new front pads and rotors at 47,000 miles, I figured I wouldn't have to change them before 90,000 miles and by then I'll probably have gotten rid of the car for the next generation M6 or used Lambo or McLaren 12C. So I figured it wasn't worth it, but I will say this, BMW calls for a spark plug change at 60,000 miles on the F10 M5 but I don't know how much that would cost out of pocket. So I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Ill answer the plug change out Dave. I have 52k miles. I just replaced my plugs and coils. Not at bmw but at a indy shop I go to. With labor it was 1200 and change. Those coils are expensive

Thanks for the heads up on the plugs and coils. I'm planning on doing mine at an Indy Shop too.

I found the price for the individual coils at $52 each and the plugs at $25 each on the getBMWparts.com website. Didn't the $1,200 seem high for just coils and plugs? I can see the plugs needing replacement in the turbo engine, but the coils? Shouldn't they last for considerably more miles/time? It does look like a pain in the ass to get to the plugs, but $600 labor?

Have you considered an extending warranty from a third party like EasyCare? I have used them on 2 previous BMWs and have been very happy with them.

Probably not but we'll see. There's a number of things that the next M5 will need to have in order for me to consider it. If there's is even a hint from BMW that it will have any kind of six cylinder engine in it then I'm out. Also the size of the vehicle. I don't want a bigger car than the F10 chassis.

Can't even imagine a 6 cylinder in this size car. Even a turbo! They'd have to go on a serious diet and that would defeat the luxury component I think. Will be interesting to see what happens. I would think that whatever happens to the M5 would also happen to the M6 though, or perhaps vice versa. I need this size car now, but my next one will be a 911 of some sort.

There are rumors (as you certainly know) that 400-500 lb will be shaved. If that's correct, then for sure next M5/M6 will be smaller than F1x. There is no way they increase the size and yet shave those weights. Despite all people thinks, using a huge amount of CF is not practical on a 100k car unless they want to increase the price significantly that it's not practical either...

I had a few other things done also but the price of the coils were 81 per and can't remember cost of the plugs. They were bought at BMW
