ED drivers: Heads up

Hi Guys,
Just thinking that some may not have driven in Germany (or Europe,) before and there are just a couple of conventions you should be aware of that could prevent an accident, like the first one we heard of on this Board.

1. ONLY drive in the fast lane (far left, except UK would be far right) when you are PASSING someone.
2. ALWAYS use your turn signals. People actually pay attentiont to those overthere.

Hope we get enough of us on a convoy and get some awsome pics!

Minutes feel like hours...............

Just couple warning for folks driving up north.

There are a lot of construction between Nuremberg and Munich.

I drove to and back from Nuremberg to Welt. The traffic was very bad.

I would suggest leaving either very early or late. Stop and go traffic fro about 12 KM.

I did manage to hit 145 mph on my C220 CDI rental.

Still waiting patiently for my pick up on 9/12.

I finally saw moonstone in person. I am in love with that color. May be i should choose that over amazonite silver.

I always stays on the left lane since i am going all out (other than sections with speed limit).

Not many super fast car on the autobahn. I did manage to get killed by a RS6 MTM. He just left me like i was standing still.

Also just a reminder to fellow ED drivers heading south to Austria and Switzerland. Better put some "stick-on" labels in your car so as to remind you to purchase the road tax stickers otherwise known as vignettes for Austria and Switzerland prior to enterng those countries. If you are caught without one, and they do inspect upon entering, a hefty Euro fine. Also, I think the Czech republic requires one too. Better do your research regarding this road tax.

Where do you buy these stickers?

You can buy them at the first fuel station you see once you enter the countries. They are cheap, between 10-16 Euro and make for great souvenirs on your car's windshield - but you have to remember to get them. When I did my ED last year, I was doing 155mph as we entered the Czech Republic and was on top of the world and almost forgot until my wife reminded me!

Have a great time on your ED - it was truly an awesome experience and something I will always fondly remember!

This answers the question...

Highway Tolls - Certain highways and expressways in Austria, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic are subject to a toll and require a toll sticker to be purchased prior to the entry into any of these three countries. These toll stickers may be purchased at gas stations, post offices and border crossings. In addition, Austria requires a safety vest which can be purchased at Austrian gas stations and an international driver license (obtainable through AAA). Please reference the country’s specific tourist website for further information.

I assume that since I also have a British driving license I don't also need an International License. They must be obligated to recognize EU driving licenses?

It depends on your bank. My bank - Charles Schwab - does not charge any fees and offers commercial exchange rates for foreign ATM withdrawals. This is the best way to get cash. Not all banks accept US ATM cards, but Citi and Deutsche Bank ATMs do. So I just go to Deutsche Bank.

In Austria and Switzerland be VERY careful as they are using cameras pretty much everywhere (bridges/tunnels/overpasses) and will send you a ticket . If they catch you in a mobile speed trap and you get pulled over you'll have to pay right away (usually cash) or they can impound belongings up to the value of your fee. Speeding in Austria and Switzerland can be very expensive (hundreds if not a thousand Euros) .
In Germany anything over 20km/h+ is going to cause you a lot of grief

Below 20 it is (for Germany)
... up to 10 km/h inside the city 15 euro, outside the city 10 euro
... 11 - 15 km/h inside the city 25 euro , outside the city 20 euro
... 16 - 20 km/h inside the city 35 euro, outside the city 30 euro
... 21 - 25 km/h inside the city 80 euro, outside the city 70 euro

Also note the police is very strict on the use of cellphones without handsfree, close following others on the Autobahn and not keeping a safe distance especially during
rain/fog.

Basically just be a sensible driver and you'll be fine (and move to the right after passing...)

Not a direct answer to your question, but it is a good resource for traffic conditions in Germany as well:
