I did my ED last year first week of October. Austria mandates that from October 15 or 16, that the car be equipped with snow tires or snow chains. Germany does not have a specific date (in the past, it had and used to be the same date as Austria's) and instead mandates the availability of either when condition warrants (meaning even if in the middle of July and there are snow conditions in the mountains that the car have the necessary tires/chains). I was also told that the cops may stop you just to inspect that you have those necessary equipment and of course the required travel tax stickers (in Switzerland and Austria) I have mapped out to go through several passes and in my research that some of the Alpiine passes may have snow condition as early as October and up to early May. If you are not going through any of the passes through the Alps, then you should be fine. Anyway, October last year was quite pleasant, not cold and not hot. We went through those Alpine passes without any problems and it was dry -- we even stayed at a ski lodge (at least during the winter months) and the grass was green with flowery shruberry all around.

You only need like 30 days prior to secure an ED date... Why not still shoot for September? Just remember Munich gets a bit nuts around Oktoberfest...

I have been a lurker for a while and will be getting a 2014 m5 ED on 9/2. Was supposed to be one of the 24 new m5 deliveries last sept but personal issues kept me from getting one. If you are going to change to ED in Sept perhaps you can email Jon Shafer and see what he can do for you.

This is quite true. The hotel in Munich where we stayed usually would charge about $120/night but because we were there during Octoberfest, we were charged at $380/night. So, unless you could only do ED in October, moving it a month earlier before Octoberfest (this year it starts September 21) would be advisable. I originally planned doing my ED in September last year but due to my working at a major broadcasting company, my request for a September vacation was turned down being September is "sweeps" month and also when new tv shows are introduced. I had to change my vacation to October. Anyway, I know that you and your wife will get to enjoy your car more when you do ED. Good Luck!

I had ED OCT/NOV, was fearful of weather and now have end March 2014 - wife and 2 kids with me on the school break for 2.5 weeks.

Laguna Seca Blue, CP, CCB, all options (Canada) except night vision. Amaro Full leather. Light Sen Wood. They allowed me to add electric towing package too - nice of them.

Did Oct 1 delivery last year. It was a great time and while we did go into Austria and little bit of Switzerland and France, we mainly stayed in Germany. Still had a blast, but the weather was great and we could have certainly spent more time in the mountains without issue.

A lot of roads and passes may be closed in march.

I did October 17 2 years ago. Weather was fine for driving. Got cold in evenings though.

Did September 14 last year. That was excellent.

This year I'm trying to lock down Sept 27/28.
