Can this be true...
So I'm still in the process of breaking in the M5stress (Mistress). I roughly have another 1000 miles to go. Before I divulge my first impression let me disclose that I am at 5500 feet above sea level at any given time. The thin air and crappy 91 octane makes me miss New York. So back to my first impression, power wise the car feels ok, it almost feel like my buddy's 335i /w JB4. It feels weird saying that, but I have nothing else to compare it with at elevation. Which brings me to this question. I have read that at sea level full bost hits around 17.5 ish, but stated in papers the M5 will do 20 to 22 full boost to compensate for elevation. But since I am still in my break in period maybe 20/22 full boost is not unlocked? I heard during the break in maintenance the dealer unlocks a few things in the car? I honestly don't know, purely speculative at this point...

No change in power with the break in service. It's been discussed many times. Check the threads in the maintenance section (where this post will probably be moved to).

I have heard reports that full power not unlocked in break in process. I cannot comment on that. I think it may just be a placebo effect. But trust me, there will be an abundance of power, even though you're 880 times higher than the cruising altitude of a 747

I don't know, but I do feel the car gets more powerful and responsive after break in. There were two or three occasions when I drove on highway I felt lack of direct response from the engine. This never happened in my 13 m5, and my 14 m5 was equipped with CP and M performance exhaust. Strangely, when I use sport plus suspension setting the "tighten up" feeling is also less clear, compared to previous M5 and 7 serious! I guess it might just because that I'm used to drive the m5 in a after break in style, and now all I need to do is waiting for 2000km service

As the car breaks in, and all of the components seat with each other and the ECU logs data, etc... The car will reach a peak output. However, this will be such a small change you won't notice it.

Thanks for the response, god that typo was pretty darn funny. I will continue to properly break her in and see how she feels afterwards. The shop foreman at my local BMW did tell me that while in the break in period full boost is locked.

I out ran a C7 Vette from 60-130 and barely lost to a new 911 Turbo S all before my 1,200 mile service visit. Couldn't have done that on partial boost.

I second the placebo effect. If you are properly breaking it in, your not even surpassing 4500 rpm, the power comes beyond that. I don't believe in any software unlocking, even thought my sa told me that as well.

I agree, I will wait till she's able to break out of this break-in period. Have you guys tried any of the available tunes or should I say press tunes? I've seen couple of companies offering it ie. eurocharged...

OK. More to add here.
I scheduled my 1200 service appointment for next week. While I was there, the shop foreman told me they do 3 very specific things at 1200 miles: - Change the oil - Change the differential fluid - Code the transmission to shift at full "speed". (Speed of shifts, not MPH). I mentioned that I have heard many different things about this and he said he will show me the software change as he makes it if I don't believe him. So, still not sure what to believe. He said HP is a full capacity from day 1, but he added 100% the car is somewhat controlled/governed during the break in period and this is managed through the transmission, not the engine. Next question on this goes to my buddy at BMW of NA in Woodcliff Lake NJ! |

So there is some madness to the theory that we are not getting the full potential of this car during break in. I think some SA might exaggerate a little, but not all is lost after all...

I just might take him up on showing me as he codes my transmission. This would be some actual confirmation that SOMETHING changes at the break in service! PS. The same day the Shop Tech told me above, my service advisor told me its just fluids and to calm down as I won't get more power. HAHA They even contradicted eachother. |

Too many contradicting statements regarding break-in. I was told that Launch Control is disabled during break-in and BMW monitors how many times we use launch control, I'm guessing for warranty purposes. No idea whats, what.....
