BMS Stage1 s63tu New User Adjustable Setting
Hey gang,
Saw this posted in the s63tu sticky and thought some here might want to help test the new firmware and setting out. Apparently BMS has had a couple customers request a variable to let them scale torque up higher along the power band. BMS' response below. Quote:

Great post.
When he is referencing to "The type of stage 1 board type", what does that mean ? Are there different units out there for the same model engine ? For example before the official release of the JB for M5/M6 vehicles, Terry from BMS had everyone use the 550/650 (N63) units and change the "user feature" and then that unit was then ready for M5/M6 application. But now on his website the he lists the S63TU units separate. Are we running the incorrect version if we were sold the N63 kits prior ? Thanks for you time. You always answer very well for the BMS team |

Under firmware if your date ends with //3 it's the G3 board and if its //4 then it's the G3_V2 board. Note these are both Stage1 boards and BMS does not offer a JB4 system for this platform. Mike |

As as side note BMS only offers a Stage1 tune for this platform but it's funny to read all this talk about s63 "advanced" fuel control and related assertions as they apply to other piggybacks. The fuel control being talked up is biasing of the wideband o2 sensors by applying a voltage through a resistor, and biasing of the fuel pressure input of a few tenths of a volt. BMS pioneered these mechanisms for adjusting closed loop fueling in 2007 and they are available on all of their tunes, even the simple Stage1 tune, provided the wires are connected to the control box. The reality is the boost increase we're working with here with their Stage1 tune is not enough to max out the long and short term fuel trims which is why BMS hasn't included the fuel biasing harness with the s63 tune. These so called advanced piggyback boxes I'm reading about don't even include crank position offsetting to directly adjust timing advance as is offered on the JB4 G5 board. It will be interesting one of these days when someone does a bench test and reveals what is _really_ going on in each black box. But I digress the BMS Stage1 is a simple tune (analog&digital I/O only, no CANbus as a JB4 has) intended to offer 2-3psi increases over stock. The reality is this tune drives differently than other similar tunes due to how the boost is mapped in relation to pedal input and RPM. BMS's concept with the Stage1 is to preset it to their taste and then provide the proper variables to let users adjust it to their specific needs. This new variable combined with the variable to adjust the peak boost increase at high RPM will be a nice addition to s63 Stage1 and better allow people to adjust the tune to their driving taste. BMS is still looking for more testers. If anyone doesn't like the Stage1 part throttle and low end mapping then email BMS to help test out the changes.

BMS has the firmware for the original G3 board as well although it's not been tested as much as the G3_V2 board that ships with s63 Stage1 kits currently. If you want to help test it you're welcome to email them although since you are an authorized Dinan dealer they may prefer feedback from more independent enthusiasts at least in the earlier stages of testing. BMS forwarded me these customer boost logs of what the revised setting does. Both are from 2000rpm to redline. The first chart is the boost profile with the current firmware while the second chart is the boost profile with the new setting enabled. Note that with the setting enabled there is a much smoother boost ramp up as a function of RPM compared to the current firmware. This is especially noticeable in the various partial throttle positions where the new setting will allow more precise torque control.

I tried recently to purchase a tune for a client of mine that is interested. Even he was denied because of living in CA. But I assume it is only for the tunes. I purchase the oil catch cans from BMS. Those work so great for the N engines !! |

BMS tells me to date only one or two customers have been interested to test and give them feedback on the smoother firmware. Surely more of you must want to try it out?
