We are #2 in high cost to insure
According to Insure.com, the M6 is the 2nd most expensive car to insure, and the 6-series line, and the Panamera line, are prominently featured in the top 20. And also interesting that there is no 911 or M5 in the top 20. Here is the link if you want to check how they arrived at this list -- http://www.insure.com/car-insurance/...cars-to-insure.
FYI -- I pay substantially less than $3000, and live in NYC. I've gone from 1 car, a G37 to two BMW's and my insurance only went up $10 a month. currently I pay $1620 for the year. having my wife as a primary driver helped also. BTW, I am 32 and she's 31.

My premium is 518.60 per year (259.30 every 6 months). This is with a multi-car discount, and $1000 deductible, however my coverage limits are pretty high (e.g. $500k property damage).
Benefits of having a clean license with no points and no collision history.

It depends a lot on where you live. I live around Manhattan and if I lived in suburbs, my 6 month would go down from 1100 to 650. I have no tickets, accidents, claims since I got my license almost 15 years ago.

Wow, the M5 didn't even make the top 20. I pay cheap insurance also. USAA is awesome, they even give you discounts based on your rank in the military. I guess it's a good thing I didn't get that M6 then. Also surprising the Audi R8 4.2L V8 didn't make the top 20 either. Not enough horsepower I guess. Once, I ran an estimate for an Audi R8 4.2L and my insurance rate went down from the M5, lol!

I have USAA also been with them my whole life and adding a M6 coupe to my insurance would make it only go up 14 dollars a month and I would still be under 2K a year. I guess it's agood thing that the last wreck I was in was back in 2010 and I was not at fault and a clean driving record.

I would be curious to analyze the amount and use of more expensive materials like carbon fiber, magnesium and aluminum in the cars listed above as a common cause of the higher prices above (i.e. more expensive to repair). Maybe it helps the M5 that it is heavier (more steel) in this regard.

Well they are both 2 door coupes. Coupes always have higher premiums than sedans. I'm guessing the Panny is #5 because the one they listed, Turbo S, is like a $200,000 car. There also must be some stigma associated with Merc 2 door coupes that drives up premiums. Also don't insurance companies base their rates off of actuarial data?

Think of it this way, insurance companies assess premiums based on experience (losses) with repairs. An SLS is usually a weekend car and not a daily driver. A CL550 is usually a daily driver, especially now with the standard 4matic. An SLS sitting in a garage 95% of the time is less likely to have an accident than a CL550 being driven 100% of the time.

They didn't declare that they normalized based on geographic location, how the car is stored (private garage, street...), credit rating (beyond "good/clean" which may be a different specific range by insurance company depending on how the categorize), etc . These could be important factor to consider also. These prices would be based on what the quotable value from the insurance company is. It doesn't go on to qualify the way that the insurance company sets for that 'truth table' for the cars. Again, historical and projected knowledge would apply and not be uniformly applied. For my part, from Traveler's, with me being 35 (instead of 40), I pay approx $481 every 6 mos to insure the M5 with very very similar coverage to what is called out. |
