No details yet just waiting. Head if BMW ED is on vacation and it was a short week. I'm expecting BMW will make it right. There are several ways that could be accomplished.

Took delivery today at ED.

My guy told me they had one of their F10 m5 customers take delivery and blow the motor in the past week

He claimed it was due to severe abuse and completely ignoring break in procedures.

I think what he said is total BS. How could ignoring a break in period lead to catastrophic failure almost immediately? What about the press cars?

Total BS I have a witness AND they have the computer data log to prove it. Car never was abused and unlike many in my group never even saw 5k rpm!!
Don't think they would be offering me a new car if I was negligent or ignored break-in. Do you?

This bugged me so just got off the phone with BMWNA and confirmed this BS. Engine Malfunction had nothing to do with the operator.( also anyone who knows me would know this is BS)
This rumor can stop now.

Attention BMW: I drove (gently) directly to the 'Ring, with ~350 miles on ODO for first lap (driven assertively, but not redlining). I drove >1400 miles overall, and toward the end was redlining it occasionally and did some 150MPH runs on the autobahn.

If my car blew up on the way to drop off, I would have the same legal rights as BarryB (although perhaps fewer "moral rights"). If violating break-in recommendations grenaded your motor, they would enforce the "rules" via computer-- a trivial exercise.

Anyway: BarryB, I would still demand a new car and reimbursement of your air and hotel. If they don't give you this, I will happily spend a few hours a month for the next few years telling everyone who will listen that the ED experience is not worth the risk, since BMW does not stand behind their cars and your vacation would be at risk.

BTW, they have an extensive rental fleet at the Welt (including M5s)--- I asked about it.

They should tell us upfront at the Welt: if your car malfunctions and cannot be immediately (within the hour) be fixed, they will (on a 24/7 basis) transport your car to nearest dealer, provide you a best-available local rental, and deliver a like-kind car from Welt fleet to meet you at your next hotel. If I were them, I would comp the "victim" with a free night at hotel and voucher for a nice dinner (in case you want to stay an extra day). If they did this for you (and you knew this upfront), I think you'd be a happy camper right now.

If they told me this up front, I would read between the lines that these cars break down all the time.

Fair point. Maybe have my proposed policy printed on the "Roadside Assistance" info sheet they give you in your packet.

Trying to put myself in Barry's shoes, I would be most pissed/frustrated with the waiting and uncertainty as the clock was ticking on my brief vacation. Having a clear policy/plan worked out in advance would eliminate much of this anxiety, and not cost BMW much (especially since it will almost never happen)...

In my (imaginary!) world, you would always be "on your way" within an hour and would have a like-kind car by the next morning.

Not everything that people post on the internet is accurate.

Agree. They should have a hotline - and then they should implement the holiday recovery plan you suggest.

It was unfortunate I was not in Munich, it was a Sunday and bmwna was closed Mon. Since BMW NA apparantly controls this stuff I was SOL until tue, my last day of vacation. They got me the best rental in Wurtzburg on a Sunday and got me a hotel. I think it is reasonable but not what I wanted nor paid for.....
I am trying to paitienly wait but it is painful and heart breaking.

Jeez Barry that is a heart breaker. I was looking at the delivery pics yesterday and was so jealous... then today I see this. If I was gutted just reading about about it I can't even imagine how you feel. Stay strong and hopefully BMW makes it up to you.

Sorry Barry. You are a better man than I. I would be raising hell right now. It's probably a better move to be patient though. Good luck.

Barry, feeling your pain. Hopefully you get some of your expenses refunded and they make this right. But that being said it is a machine and machines do break down... as unfortunate as that sounds. Also I noticed my car had three miles on the clock and obviously that's the way I wanted it.. meaning its brand spanking new.... only problem is that they put it together on the line and then did a victory cruise and +/- 2 miles and delivered it to its owner. Not much room for a good diagnostic. So again sorry to hear it turned out this way but I don't think they were aiming to throw off ur vaca.... I am 100% problem/ scratch/ noise / viabration free and over 1900 miles on the clock. Hang in there and if you get a whole new car I am confident it won't happen again. One car out of +/- 30 delivered isn't too shabby.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, but at leasts it's great new that BMW are doing the right thing and getting you another brand new vehicle. Hopefully the wait can be expedited. One things for sure, it'll be worth it. Hang in there.

Barry, Did you get new car replacement? Or BMW is going to fix the engine only?
