M5 power steering failure while going 115 mph. Pissed is a under statement.
Wow just Wow I had near death experience today. I was driving with my friends on Stunt Rd in calabasas going into a sharp turn after the straight at 115 100 mph down shifted into the turn as I started to turn the car I lost all power assistance to the steering. I locked up the brakes into the turn and went into opposite side of the road stopped literally by grace of God. Car stopped in the dirt 20 feet before going off the side of the mountain.
Now I'm mad as hell. This is my 5th m car and I have m3 on order. Love Bmw, but after what happened tonight I don't know. This car been to the tracks gets driven on these road to same speed all the time. Performs like a champ. This Shocked me to my core. I literally almost died. Car is doing this in all modes, turns and on the straight, but no warrings on the dash PROBLEM come and goes VERRY STRANGE. Car has 20000 miles. Car is back from the dealer. Steering rack got replaced it wasn't explained why it failed, but I've contacted lawyer and will update soon. Its Sunday dealer closed, but Monday all hell is going to break loose at the Dealer. Damn, glad you are okay. When I saw this thread, I was going to make a joke about you probably just being in S+ mode, but doesn't seem as appropriate after reading the story.

Wow, WTF, glad you're OK. I'd probably hold off on driving it till it gets fixed though. Agree you should contact BMW NA.

exactly. why is everyone bitching? failures do happen. it's not bmw's fault you were going 115 and it shut off. what if you were backing out of your driveway and it went out? would you still "raise hell" at the dealer? give me a break. man up and get the shit fixed under warranty. |

I never had anything this scary happen to me in any of my cars. There's no way of finding out about this when you're dead and your car is of the cliff. The cops and public will be with you on your comment " he was going at the high rate of speed and lost control going into a corner and went of the side of the mountain" My beloved BMW let me down in a biggest way possible. I have no problem getting it fixed by dealer and I'm sure it will get fixed, but I personally have no confidence in BMW if this kind of failure can happen to your car. |

I'm sure this is a freak occurrence, but I can understand how the OP's confidence is shaken. If the airbag deployed because he was aggressively turning the wheel after the steering failed, then the OP basically has the worse luck in the world. |

Any m5 owners here haven't taken it past 100? ....didn't think so. Sounds like a freak occurrence at a critical moment. I don't think you should be driving it either, especially since you can replicate the problem.

Only when turning right and attempting to return to center? If so are all the links and joints still together on the right front assembly?
If The Servotronic pump goes, there would be a Christmas tree lit up and limp mode. |

Right, left doesn't matter can feel the steering wheel gets very hard on the straight also. What's crazy I can make multiple turns and drive for awhile no problems or multiple turns after that with no assistance in the wheel. Tomorrow I'll be at the dealer they know me very well it will be fixed and I'll post what happened with this.

I cant believe that this guy is getting stick from some of you....If something critical fails on a car that has been appropriately maintained and under warranty etc etc that leads to someone dying...Then BMW would be in deep do do...

Stop posting videos and get it fixed
I'd be pretty freaked out if this happened to me - but - instead of getting into the car again (risking your life and others) to film and post a video - drive or have the car towed to dealer and get it fixed under warranty. If you are not happy with BMW's response or are not comfortable driving it for fear of it happening again then sell it and buy another brand of car.
