Nope. I turned it off the day of delivery and have never turned it back on. I doubt it would make a noticeable difference on my lifetime average of 14.4mpg.

I fucking hate that feature. There is no way that the start stop feature is good for the motor either. I have no proof, but it just doesnt feel right.
Besides that, the AC blows warm, car starts back up abruptly, its just weird. |

Exactly this, how can this be a good thing? I had on the M3, never used it, have it the M5, used maybe 6 times and turned it off. It's fundamentally wrong
Although...with the CP exhaust it does a little growl when it fires up, made the girl in the car next me snap her head over and smile. |

Off since day one and when it's accidently turned on I get so embarrassed when my car shuts off at the light and starts back up. Straight piped. I know if I saw that happened id be like "what the fuck is wrong with that car"
Ain't no such thing as gas savings with these cars lol I also agree it just feels wrong on the M5. On the other quiet cars, I'm okay with it.

It's not a feature to save on fuel consumption as much as it is CO2 levels from a car idling at a full stop. So, no, it won't increase MPG, but it will decrease the amount of emissions as a whole. Just about every production car has or is getting this feature.

Question:
Won't the Start/Stop feature damage the engine, battery and relevant components? I know BMW must've tested the durability during prototype testing (back in 2011 and before)..........but I dunno, the whole concept seems a bit iffy. http://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/ne...r-car-s-engine What do you guys think? P.S. I remember a BMW X5 3.0 Diesel having this feature on. At first, I thought his car died or something and he had to restart his vehicle |

The stop start has been around since 70's for Toyota on the Crown sedan and then VW and fiat made it main stream in the 80's on the Regata and Polo, so its been around for a very long time.
Does it work... yes, you will save typically in the range of <12 percent, and in the United States, idling wastes approximately 3.9 billion gallons of gasoline per year, so for each car it may be a small saving but overall it makes for a big difference globally! Its proven and cleaver tech, evrything is beefed up to cope, i.e. larger deep cycle batterys and heavyer cabling etc to cope. It monitors engine oil temp, cat function, HVAC requirements and other loads plus closely monitors battery condition. Do I us it - very occassionaly when traffic and conditions suit - its nice to sit there with no engine noise and vibrations etc if traffic is super heavy and very stop start, i.e long stops. |

Actually I found it too dangerous when you are in up hills stopping behind the red light and want to go right after light turns green! Since the 2 second braking is no longer available (it actually takes a second or two to ignition on) your car will roll back as soon as you release the brake pedal...

+1 off since day 1!
Cannot be good for the motor starting and stopping like that. The majority of wear and tear on a motor is at startup so go figure. Off and not turning back on! If I gave a shit about global emissions or saving a buck at the pump I wouldn't buy an M5 in the first place!! Lol

I leave mine on because I love to hear the engine come back on and shake the car
