Tire shop chipped my CC rotor - anything to worry about?
Had new wheels and tires installed and noticed one rotor was chipped. The tire shop manager removed the wheel personally to investigate and saw scrapes on the inner wheel barrel that were fresh and said he would make it right. I'm just not sure if the chipped edge is anything to worry about. Anyone with a similar experience?

I would have them replace both the rim or refinish atleast and defiantly the rotor.

The rotors integrity is now compromised and would need to be replaced. See the link below to BMW's carbon ceramic brake technical bulletin, specifically pages 20 & 21 for your issue. I wouldn't run the risk with a crucial part like your brakes.

100% new rotor needed. I would ask BMW if they need to be replaced in pairs or just one though as with steel its not recommended to just swap one side

Because of the cost of carbon discs and depending on the how big the shop is I don't think they'll immediately agree to replace but could contribute a percentage for their mistake and keeping in mind of how the discs are already worn.

Need Replacement for sure. My buddy purchased a Corvette ZR1, Dealer provided him Blue plastic covers for the Ceramic Rotors. During maintenance or working on your car, its Protected.

I wonder if shops nowadays have to carry additional insurance if they are going to expose themselves to the liability of working on vehicles with ceramic rotors? There is an interesting article below that describes these ceramic brakes as the "used car plague." I'm not sure I'd want the liability myself, talk about an expensive PITA if I chip my own rotor just taking a wheel off in my garage. And to boot, they are less practical/useful (take time to build up heat so they squeak and don't even stop as good until they warm up,) on the street, which is where you spend most of your time. I look forward to going down to COTA in a couple of weeks for BMW M track days and trying out some new M cars with ceramic brakes on the track, but those are the two primary parts of the equation that fit my criteria for using ceramic brakes - 1) I don't own and thereby pay to maintain them and 2) they are for use on a closed track. https://www.autotrader.com/car-news/...-plague-267318

DeMuro makes a good point regarding resale of cars with CC brakes, which I did not consider when I purchased the car. The chipped rotor pictured in my original post is from a 2015 with 42K miles. I plan on keeping the car for five years. When it does come time to sell, the car will likely have close to 100K mikes and need rotors. At least I don't have to worry about it for another 60K miles. Just got off the phone with the Discount Tire store manager, and he said their claims dept will be giving me a call.

Update...been playing phone tag with Discount Tires' 3rd party claims administrator so nothing new to report. I called the local BMW dealer for a quote to replace one front rotor...
Parts $6,770.30 Tax $558.55 Labor $100.00 Total $7,428.85 I need to ask the service advisor for a list of required parts because the rotor MSRP is $4,231 so not sure what other parts are in the quote. Looking on the web, the best price I found for the rotor is $3,830 from Turner Motorsport. It will be interesting to hear the response from claims administrator when we finally connect.
