Trusting oil level sensor wasn't such a good idea for this guy..Rod Bearing failure

Its never a pleasant feeling telling someone that their M5 needs rod bearings but just recently we had a '14 M5 come into the shop for a re-flash and ended up staying for few days to replace rod bearings.
To make this shorter, the M5 came in for a re-flash but we noticed that it had a faint knocking noise coming from the bottom end. We told the customer to take the car to dealer and let them diagnose the car, but the customer said that his car was already red-flagged due to the fact that he had JB4 in the past, followed by two different flash tunes and currently has meth and downpipes. So instead of doing a flash that day, the customer decided to get oil changed and send the oil sample to Blackstone for analysis. Few days later the customer's car gets towed into the shop on flatbed as the slight ticking developed into a full blown knock. Initially we checked the oil level on NBT and it came out at max level. Then we put the car on a lift to drain the oil and inspect lower oil pan, and what do you know? Only 5 quarts of oil came out! Now the customer is getting WPC treated rod bearings and new oil level sensor.

So, if you guys do your oil changes yourself, do not just rely on the oil level sensor to be always right. Since we dont have dipstick, the best way to test the sensor is by draining oil as much as you can, then filling her up with only 6 quarts of oil and get the NBT reading. If that comes in low, you know your sensor is working right.

That sucks, faulty sensor causing oil starvation. Any other symptoms, like the car running hotter than usual? Or does the meth mask that??...I dont know...

I'll try to remember next time dealer changes my oil to ask how much was actually drained.

Depending on what fuel and how aggressive i would do no more than 5 k between oil changes.

This one is at 9K but yes, with a tune you want to keep oil changed every 5 to 6K. Remember, clean oil extends the life of the turbos as well, so its a cheap price to pay if you are running a high performance setup.

no doubt one of the dumbest things on our cars, technology isn't always better, good old fashioned dip stick that you can see and smell the oil would be better

Sorry for dragging up an old thread... are you suggesting then to fill with 6L then run the engine to come up to temp to get a measurement? Is that not a little dangerous or is 6L safe enough as such?

For just that reason, I do 8 quarts, check then top off. 6 is a little scary in my opinion and you can serve the same purpose with 8 quarts.

Weigh the fluid you remove as well and I like the 8 quart approach as well. Just enough to trigger the reading to add oil but not o low that you risk damage.

9 litres go in at oil change time then I check it on the dash measure meter and it will take just under half litre more to full on ''level'' ground.
