Engine hot cooling warning question
Hey guys
I'm about to buy a used m5 but after I test drove it today a bit a little aggressively I brought it back to the dealer lot and I noticed the fans were on for quite a while after shutting engine. I also noticed a message on the idrive about "engine hot please allow cool" or something similar along those lines I forgot to take a picture of the message but does anyone know if this message comes on when the fans are on outside the car? I'm worried it might be coolant or water pimp related since car has no warranty |

When I first bought my car, used, this would happen...The warning message about running too hot. I know the car had lots of stuff changed...Oil, brake pads, tires, not sure about coolant, prior to it being listed. That message eventually went away after a couple weeks and has never come back in the past 1.5 years, so don't know how to explain it....

The warning bothers me because the dealer is about 3 hours aaay the last thing I want to happen is the pump to fail as soon as I take the car.
I'm hoping they can look into that Thanks for the help guys really helpful |

The fans running is normal after shut down. Did you pop the hood when you got back after the test drive? If you did you will get that warning on the dash telling you the engine is hot.
Disregard I just re read your post that it was in the i drive screen, the one I was talking about pops up under the speedo. No I have never seen that warning you are describing. Did you notice the oil temp when you got back?

Fans on after driving is quite normal; I've never seen the message you reference. Coolant, possible leak?

Ok, after driving I pop my hood either to let everything cool down in the garage or hook up my battery tender. If the engine is up to temp and I pop the hood I get the message, "hot engine compartment......." I forgot the exact verbage. I bet since my car is off when I pop the hood thats why it comes up on the dash and not in the idrive screen. I wonder if its the same message Im getting, just showing up in the idrive screen cause your car was running. GL!

When I first drove a comp pack M5 on the track I learned that these cars don't like hitting redline. The instructor told me to shift about 400 rpm earlier. After making that change my car was reliable all day and faster. So if you're waiting to shift until it tachs out that is what will happen.
