F10 M5 6 speed manual transmission

Hey guys,
I'm looking to order a 2015 M5 with a 6 speed manual transmission. I've been looking since June and have had no luck find one to test drive. I also haven't been able to find any threads/reviews/articles on it. It seems that everyone gets the DCT. I understand that it does shift faster than a person, but i want to physically shift through the gears. I've been told that BMW has been neglecting the development of the 6MT in the last couple years since everyone is turning to DCT, but that doesn't mean that their 6MT is bad right? I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts.

thanks!

You will find lots of opinions on the 6MT for the latest F1x M5/M6 M cars. I've only driven a couple of these cars with the 6MT. There are some members who have experience with the 6MT both on and off the track and in both the M5 and M6. The only opinion that I will give on the matter is that it is an interesting experience. On the one hand it really does give the user a more connected experience, but on the other the majority of people feel that the 6MT is just not a match for the Twin Turbo S63tu engine.

Also, I think that for some reason there may be more 2014 M6 Gran Coupes with the 6MT than 2014 M5's with the 6MT. So you could try to find an M6 Gran Coupe to test drive too.

I'd love to physically shift through the gears as well but the manual of BMW is pretty disappointing, so I highly doubt it would be any good on the M5 as I have not driven a manual M5. I wasn't a big fan of automated manuals, but the DCT does a pretty damn good job. Makes it almost hard not to like it.

I have driven MT for about 20 years and I really love MT. To me, It's the only way that I feel driving my car by myself and it's the most joy of driving, but I believe the M-DCT is much faster and more fun for this big/heavy car! It's funny that I have M2 set for the harshest setting and S3 while I use the gear lever instead of paddle shifters to change the gears It's not the same feeling of MT, but close

I'm in the same boat. I have a 2015 M5 on order with the 6MT and haven't had an opportunity to test drive one. I figure this will be the last chance to buy an M5 with the MT option so I'm going for it. Fingers crossed!

I own one with a 6 speed. I test drove the DCT car before I decided on the 6mt. I was THIS close to pulling the trigger on the DCT because it behaves so well and shifts so crisply. In the end, I decided to go for the 6 speed. I have had 6 speed cars for the last 10 years and I just couldn't give up the feeling of rowing your own gears.

I drive my cars on a daily basis so having a 6 speed keeps me feeling more connected and awake while I drive on my boring daily commute. if I drove the m5 on the track more than maybe I would take the quicker shifting DCT. but lets face it, I didn't buy the car to race or be .5 sec faster than another m5. I bought the car to have fun with. and 6 speeds are just more fun to me. maybe demographics has something to do with it... I also noticed that most M5 owners are also older than me (I am 27) so they probably have different considerations when choosing a tranny.

either way, you will enjoy the car with EITHER transmission. so I don't think there's a wrong choice....

I have a 6 sp. and love it. Really disliked the non-involving nature of the SMGs I had in the E46 M3 and E60 M5, this after my experience with the 6 sp. in the E39 M5 which was magical. Sure, the DCT shifts quicker, but I don't drag race that often. I take my Beast to the track often, and love the way the car matches the revs on the downshift. The main thing you may want to do is replace the crappy stock shifter (long throw and rubbery) with a short shifter. I've tried the Rogue and hated the throws. Installed the UUC Ultimate short shifter and it's perfect. Much shorter throws with out being overly notchy.

I was in the same quandary. Every BMW I’ve owned had three pedals and couldn’t see myself without. At the time an inventory search showed the only MT was in Colorado so didn’t have high hopes for a test drive. I spent hours and weeks reading reviews and opinions on the topic. My brother is an automotive journalist and die hard MT guy and even his review of the F10 M5 MT biased in favor of DCT. By the time I drove the M5 I had prepared myself the DCT was the proper transmission for the vehicle. I admit my first time behind the wheel with the DCT I was amazed how responsive and seamless the gearbox was. DCT is without a doubt an amazing leap from SMG and one of the top semi-automatic transmissions I’ve driven. Decided the M5 was my next vehicle last June but the spent the next 45 days settling on transmission. Went to multiple dealers and drove the DCT a half dozen times and each time left impressed but not convinced. Came to the realization that although uncertain how the M5 will drive with a manual, I am confident the DCT isn’t the proper transmission for me.

My CP 6MT is scheduled to finish production tomorrow and should be here next month. I’m down south and if you are still vacillating after I take delivery you are more than welcome to drive mine. Might even be open to meeting you half way. I’ve got a 1.5 mile work commute so break in will take forever without a road trip. Let me know.

Good luck with your quandary. It’s a wonderful problem to have.

I'm as much a 6MT defender as anyone, but it's not paired well to this car IMO. My recommendation is find a test drive before your order locks.

Next month is so far away. I found a dealership in Houston that has/had a 2013 6MT M5 and am just waiting to hear back from them. If they still have it, I have a meeting in Houston in 2 weeks and I'll test drive it then. If not, I'd be more than happy to drive down to southern california to test drive your car. It'll be an excuse to go party in mexico anyways. thanks a bunch!

get the MT. No other sedan of this caliber offers a manual.

fyi it is a PITA in rush hour traffic but you can argue that all MTs are

As Carlos Lago of MT said. It's not bettor or worse. It's a lateral experience. Same but different. It's definitely a "sloppier" experience and there is lag but it gives you the involvement, good and bad. It also burbles and pops much more than a DCT which is cool. My next car will be an M4 6MT and if I had to do the M5 over, I'd still get a 6MT with the comp package which wasn't available on the 13.

I've driven a 6MT M5 several times. It's a very nice combo. If you want an MT, you're fine. It's not balky, clutch is nice and progressive, etc.
