BMW and Tesla in talks over batteries and lightweight parts

Tesla, BMW in talks over batteries, light-weight parts, Musk says

http://www.reuters.com/article/2014/...0TD0HX20141123

Nov 23 (Reuters) - U.S. electric carmaker Tesla Motors is in talks with Germany's BMW over a possible alliance in batteries and light-weight components, Tesla's Chief Executive Elon Musk told German weekly Der Spiegel.

In an interview published on Sunday, Musk described BMW's production of carbon fibre reinforced car body parts as "interesting" and "relatively cost efficient."

BMW uses carbon fibres from its joint venture with materials supplier SGL to make reinforced passenger cell parts for its i3 electric hatchback and i8 plug-in hybrid sports car.

Officials at BMW were not immediately available to comment.

"We are talking about whether we can collaborate in battery technology or charging stations," Musk was quoted as saying in the interview.

There were no further details on the specific nature of the alliance, however BMW and Tesla executives already met in June to discuss the creation of charging stations usable for different types of electric cars.

Rival Daimler, owner of the Mercedes brand, said last month it would continue to collaborate with Tesla even after selling its remaining four percent stake in the U.S. company. Tesla has also worked with Toyota on electric SUVs.

Tesla's billionaire co-founder Musk also told Der Spiegel that he expects Tesla to have a battery production plant in Germany in five to six years. (Reporting by Ludwig Burger; Editing by Clelia Oziel)

This could very well just be like the electronics industry. They could just be selling parts/materials/components to each other just like how Samsung supplies to every major electronics brand.

Of course, I could be completely wrong, and there might be actual collaboration on the design/engineering.

Stuff like this where ideas and collaboration amongst manufacturers help push the industry forward is far more interesting to me than BMW building a super car.

Interested to see where this eventually leads to.

People like to say that, but who else is selling a full EV at the same price and performance level... in volume? No one that I can name.

Exactly, both Toyota and Mercedes sold their Tesla shares. Tesla is also over hyped. There have been electric cars for at least 10 years. The trend is not exponentially improving.

Given Tesla's plans for battery production, I'll be surprised if we don't see more partnership press releases springing up from other auto manufacturers as well.

"Tesla will build the world’s largest and most advanced battery factory in Nevada"

Tesla's Reno area "gigafactory" that they committed to building will net them 20 years of sales and property tax abatement from the state of Nevada according to The Wall Street Journal last week. I think Tesla is for real.

This is a sign of the times. The regulatory environment has caused R&D costs to balloon and partnering is one way to cope.

... They sold their stake because of the insane valuation.

I don't think many have grasped or realized this change in the automotive sector.

I get the range and performance.
But the weight, the overall quality and the hype Musk does for Tesla, is putting me off.
Norway is a huge market for Tesla, and they are experiencing alot of issues.
Strange since an conventional engine/drivetrain contains 2000 + parts, and an EV solution is a mere 20'ish.

Tesla is basically the new Golf in Norway. And now the next wave is coming with the D launched. I test drove the P85, and as you say, the interior quality is not very impressing, neither are the seats.
But it handles quite good despite the high weight and it goes like hell.

However, the quality issues they are experiencing related to the drivetrain is not good. But what can you expect from a relatively new brand? The media seems to be all over this, but I don't think there would have been such a fuss over it if it was related to another brand with conventional cars. There will ALWAYS be a higher rate of quality issues the first years of a brand's life, no matter what the product is. Quality comes after testing and failing, so I will give Tesla the benefit of the doubt for now.

If I would buy one myself? No. I like the unlimited range of a IC engine, and the interior quality really needs to be taken up some steps to match the European cars, not only the American.

The challenge of making a pure electric vehicle a viable choice for people who live in condos/apartments and use on-street parking is a huge hurtle impeding mass implementation.
