F10 M5 ECU software cracking question
hey guys,
couple of my friends are really good when it comes to computers/programming/cracking etc in order for them to give it a shoot at cracking the software for the ECU do they need access to it directly or can one of you download the software and send it to them so that they would be able to start working? thank you! |

they have never worked on cars but if I can get them started I am sure they will find a solution. we are talking about guys who do this because they can and not because of the money....

It's not like writing a code of app for iphone! It's like writing a code of OS for iphone
Are they that good to know how this car works?

lets put it this way....
one of them was 13 years old when he broke into the servers from Pentagon (was not prosecuted due to age). the city that I live in has so many programming companies that programmers are always need it.they write code for Continental,IBM,Mercedes etc Romania and India are famous for their IT brains.... At Microsoft romanian is the second spoken language.... we do not have the financial power to purchase such a fine automobile but we can give it a try to crack this software. as I see it is a win - win situation.... |

As for cracking the ecu encryption I'm not sure you'd be able to do that without the various ecu components as they're probably going to need it to verify their modifications actually work. Having access to the vehicle would likely speed up their ability to figure out how it works.
To crack it they'd have to either be able to flash the ecu with custom software (somehow bypassing or decrypting the key used to sign the software) or find a piggyback system that somehow tricks the ecu into doing the things you want to (eg controlling boost, etc). Don't really see how you can figure that out without the hardware itself though. Kind of similar to the process you would go through to crack a playstation's software but probably harder. |

Ok. Maybe not technically harder than cracking a PS4, but much less people working on it and sharing information, thus harder from an effort standpoint.
And people are more willing to brick a $500 console vs. $100k car so less people will try/less iteration. |

oh my god so many ppl above dont know shit about encryption and programming.
they are not going to tune the car, they are going to try and crack the encryption. once its cracked it becomes openly readable and modifiable for a real car tuner to take it from there. so what they need is a copy of the currently encrypted ecu software.

Yes. This is true (they need a copy of the software) and 'could' break encryption without the hardware. However figuring out the key is mich harder without the hardware that cjecks encryption and you'd still need to verify correct re-encryption of the software on the ecu itself (hence easier if they had the hardware as they could look for and exploit weaknesses in the ecu verification software).
What is probably easier and what others have done are to trick the ecu into accepting false signals so you can tune what you want (piggyback). Seems like there are claims the encryption keys were leaked though. |

By the way, I believe the software you'd need is the same software that is used to flash your car's systems to the new iLevel versions (might be what you need to change stuff for tuning purposes), and the software BMW uses to unlock features (thing that generate FSC codes, probably not available outside a dealership).

First of all thank you guys for the open discussions as this is what brings this forum forward.
Second, could any of you or anybody else provide us with a copy of the encrypted ecu software? Thank you |
