Transmission in "Park"

Is there way to engage the transmission in PARK, once the engine has been shutdown?

I'm used to previous cars where I set the car to Neutral, then turn engine off, and then engage parking brake.

I know that Park will engage will engage when you turn off engine while in Drive. Just curious if there's a better way for the times I shift to neutral first, and don't want to turn the car back on.

I traded in an e90 M3 for the M5. The M5 can't be in neutral to engage park. The engine must be in drive or reverse. The M3 could engage park fron neutral.

Ive driven my M6 for the fast few days by putting it in neutral engaging the parking brake and turning it off and the P symbol for park comes on every time.

Yeah, my 2013 M6 coupe does not seem like mine works like that. if i shut down the engine when in neutral, a warning like comes on telling me the car is not in park and can drift. when i shut down when in drive, it goes into park and nothing yells at me...

^ Maybe pulling the parking brake before turning the engine off makes the car shift to P when turned off even if it was in Neutral immediately before? I don't own an M5 or M6 so I can't test, but that's the only thing I can think of that would explain how you two could see different behavior.

well on second thought, one might need to have the car in netural - in my M6 it will go into park if you tap the starter button a second time without foot on break. so it goes into park after shut down when it's in drive or reverse...in netural one needs to press the start button a second time.

+1

You shut it off in neutral with the parking brake on then get your foot of the brake pedal and press the start stop again.

This has been addressed a number of times on this forum.

On my 2012 M5:

1. if I stop with the car in gear, any gear, and select the park brake and turn off the engine, the car goes into P

2. if I select neutral before I select the park brake, then shut down I get a ridiculous warning about the car rolling away, then the car selects P by itself

Either way the car ends up in P.

Im confused - with DCT there is actually a Park? DO you still need to put on E brake then?
I remember with SMG on my e46, I always left it in first with e brake pulled.

At the BMW M Performance School, I was taught to leave an M5 DCT in gear and then shut off the engine -- I was informed that doing so automatically sets the car to park.

I don't have my F10 M5 yet, so this is if I remember correctly from test driving the new M.

The e-brake on the new M5 is electronic. The M5 doesn't have a "park" mode separate from the e-brake engaging. I think thats where your confused.

So, when the car shows "P", the e-brake is engaged. I would think that the red light on the e-brake button should light up as well.

I know that Park will engage will engage when you turn off engine while in Drive. Just curious if there's a better way for the times I shift to neutral first, and don't want to turn the car back on.
Follow this procedure:

When you go to turn the engine off... hold the "start-stop" button in for a second or more until "P" shows on the dash.

Push it a second quick time to power down electronics.

You can engage the parking brake before or after the "P" maneuver.

Thx for clarifying - that is exactly what was confusing me.
