Anyone try a 535d?
Had a 535d loaner when bringing the M5 in for AC issues. To my surprise, that thing feels real fast! The massive torque made my M5 feel weak in comparison. Of course as you get going it drops off but man... That wallop off the line feels awesome. I may have to reconsider my next lease

I have driven the M550d and its chassis setup is same as 550i M-Sport. It is no M car. Not even as fast as a 550i.

Had a 535d awd wagon in Austria. Thing was a torque monster when you wanted it and amazing gas mileage if you minded your manners. Great engine, great car (not availabe here, of course).

Torquey for a couple of seconds then pooooof your bubble of feeling fast is burst even faster when you see speedometer doesn't agree with your butt's accelerometer - I had it i believe as a loaner and as a member said above not even close to 550i because I had 550i when I drove 535d ! and BTW it took me a while before I actually realized that M5 is faster than 550i because had Dinan Stage 2 on it.
My 2 cents |

Agreed. BTW I'm not saying in anyway the 535d is better than an M car. It didn't have the sport package either. It looked like something my dad would drive. I was just pleasantly surprised at how fun it was just stepping on the gas and getting good mpg was bonus. The m5's turbos feel good on certain days and in certain gears. This thing was pretty consistent.

I think you need to a) drive your M5 a bit harder or B) You've got an engine fault.
I've had a 640d for a couple of weeks as a loaner (identical performance to a 535d), and while I agree, they are pretty quick for a diesel, there is no scenario, at any rev range, at any speed, that the 640d would come close to my car. I enjoy a "spirited" drive and in the dry I could barely break traction in the 640d with all the driver aids off, when I turn everything off in my M5 I have to seriously concentrate to keep it in check. Sorry, not even close in perceived or actual performance - light years apart. My response is based on you're statement "The massive torque made my M5 feel weak in comparison" Sorry, just my own observations Last edited by M5 RAG; 09-01-2014 at 10:45 AM.. |

US 535d is actually the same as Euro 530d. The Euro 535d has 313hp and 630Nm.

I love it M6-coupe when you pull a video out of your library - to prove your point and more without being biased -
Wow this video is amazing about not the 535d but the highly respected diesel "M car" with 3 turbos and yet according to Chris Harris "Disappointing". PERIOD!! -

Yes yes. I own an M5 I drive it in sport plus most if not all the time and I have my hills and on ramps where I light up the tires, safely . I'm not talking about the active diffs or the suspension or how sharp the M5 feels in comparison to the conservative diesel. I just think the pull of that engine is appealing. That's all I'm saying. As Chris Harris says about the wonderful surging acceleration and how it's gratifying. Very different from the the M5 because it's about torque and not hp. Autobild even ranked the M550d higher than the M5 because of the overall package. As a sports saloon I don't agree but I can see why they picked the diesel. Of course these diesels are standard cars with performance parts and are not M cars. The one I drove didn't even have the sport package and was only the 535d. For those have you who haven't tried yet, you should sample it to see what else BMW in their arsenal. Not to cross shop and cause a flame war. But to have fun with it. I did.

No flaming intended just struggling to see your point, if you'd said you're sick of the M5 fuel bills and general running costs, and that you've driven a 535d with way less performance and torque but its vastly cheaper to run and is still fun to drive with respectable shove for a diesel, I'd get your point |
