Road Buzzing... Loose component in steering wheel?

I had this on my 13 M5. It drove me nuts. Only buzzed on certain road surfaces. It sounded like it was coming from the steering column or the driver's side of the dash near the HUD.

Turned out after a search here on this forum that mentioned checking the door locks where the little stalk comes up through the door. Right by your left ear. The two surfaces vibrated against each other. I took out the trim ring for the lock and put a small piece of Velcro around the inside of it.

The sound has been gone ever since. I could have sworn it was coming from the steering wheel or the HUD unit.

Can anyone comment on the steering wheel rattle fix? I have a 2014 M5 with what I think is the same issue. The link from the earlier post #14 from Dinan M6 is no longer available.

It could be the lane departure vibration generator in the steering wheel.

I have this same noise and it seems like its coming from the steering wheel at speeds above 60 and when going over rough roads only.
im going to take the steering wheel apart and take out that vibrator or figure out how i can make it stop making noise cuz its so annoying to hear

Im having this same issue and its the vibrator
when i took it out the noise stopped.. but like others say it throws a lane departure error since its unplugged.

so i used padding and tape to insulate it from the wheel. it helped about 50% the noise is not as pronounced but its still there and im OCD so this is not gonna fly with me.
next thing im going to try is to remove the metal retaining clip all together and just use electric tape and tape it around the wheel and report back if that works.
If there was a way to code it out that would be best fix. and just take it out.

Please do report back about results of removing the clip. I suspect the clip is the problem for a lot of people.

I vaguely recall that there was an error if removing the vibrator, but never looked into trying to code it out.

Yea it gives error if there was a way to code it out that be sweet

Fixed my buzzing noise that I was getting at speeds over 60 over bumps and rough roads from the steering wheel. It’s the metal clip holding the vibrator in place. I simply taped to to the wheel n no noise!!

With the instructions for getting the cover off on page 1, hopefully this thread will help a lot of people.

Did you tape over the clip, or did you remove the clip and wrap tape around the vibrator and just wedge it back into the wheel?

update issue not fixed its the gold piece that spins that makes the buzzing sound because it has play in it up and down and somehow the way it vibrates from road bumps causes that noise..
is there a way to code out that vibrator unit all togeher?
if i unplug it it will throw a lane departure malfuction so unplugging is not a option

I think my esys setup is broken, so I don’t know about trying coding anytime soon. It could be that an appropriate resistor across the terminals might fool the controller.
