Big decision: M5 vs 550i xdrive
I have a unique opportunity to trade in my 550i XDrive for a gorgeous Monte Carlo blue M5. My 550 is a 2014 with 52k miles and M5 is a 2013 with 78K miles. The mileage on the M5 scares the hell out of me but it's a rare opportunity for me to own a supercar with all the options. And as you can see my signature I'm familiar with the Ms. The only way I would do this is if a bumper to bumper warranty is included. Since I live in the Northeast this is a big decision because it means I have to find a winter beater vehicle. But the 550i M sport still leaves a lot to be desired for the performance perspective! It's a heavy car and with 450 hp I still feel is lacking power. Both care are one owner car clean Carfax what's a good maintenance history but not perfect history.
One of the biggest mechanical risks of owning and M5 with this amount of mileage? What should I be focusing on during the test drive? Do you guys think I'm nuts For trading a newer 550 with less Miles for an older M5 with more miles?

M5's a whole other animal.
With that said, 78k is quite a bit of mileage so warranty's a must as is clean service history. IMO I would try to get a car with lower mileage and a 14 or newer LCI. The 13's had some issues. Tell TrevorM3 to give you a deal on the one he's selling and get rid of the 550i; I know him personally and his cars are clean.

concur with above assessment. If you want an M5 - there are better examples out there...

Trust him,....me,..and any others here on the board. But,..Whatever you do,...don't test drive the M5 if you have no plans of getting it. I, like some here graduated from a 550ix M Sport to an M5,....and just as sure as a Tuna Fish sandwich is different from a PB 'n J sandwich,...the case of the 550 to M5 is no different. Now, don't get anyone wrong,..the 550 is a great car!,...and is fast! But an M5 will leave it sitting at the traffic light,..all day,..every day! Also, if by change you consider the 550, ensure it has had the Engine Campaign work done. This is an expensive freebie from BMW if the vehicle qualifies.

13' with 43k in the classifieds for $48K; maybe room to negotiate. 7-8K more for 35K less miles ...
Be patient and you'll be rewarded; the values of these cars are nosediving and this will only accelerate with the release of the F90 M5.

That's not a good deal if this is the same one at Richard Catena wholesalers. That car is worth 35k max they have it for almost 40k. How much are they giving you for your 550?
I would be patient and wait |

Wouldn't touch a 78k mile BMW out of warranty, and I have owned them since 1999 close to every model no way. Also you have no idea how it was driven, just my two cents. Good luck.

Good call Logical. Better mileage OR full warranty. There's nothing to say the M will not go on for at least double the 78k but if there's no warranty make sure you have a stash of $$ in case of problems. With the G30 coming it's a good time to pick up an F10, but remember 560hp through 2 wheels is a lot different to 450 through xDrive. Much more fun, not from start but, from rolling, it'll kick ass
