Just guessing but stopping like that could be bad gas/blocked fuel filter or low pressure fuel pump failure.

Maybe fuel level sensor stopped working and you ran out of gas?

level was falling expectedly. I'll fill it up and see how much goes in. I'm in tow truck now. that was pain in 110*f heat. yea i'm thinking either fuel module or pump. i replaced this module brand new last year. maybe the pump went. need to scan with ista once back home. getting dropped off at a motel. will need to figure out how I'm gonna make it back another 200 miles!

it wasn't the fuel running out. just filled it up and only 11gal went in which was expected from the gauge reading. hopefully either module or low pressure fuel pump.

btw is there a way to put the car in neutral if i can't start the car tomorrow morning when tow truck comes?

What a pain in the ass! There should be a mechanical switch under the car, on the transmission. It’s probably easier to see if a tow truck has vehicle dollies.

EKPS fault.

I hate this thing. Same failure happened to me last summer. I replaced it with a brand new unit from FCP and this again. I feel this unit loves to overheat due to where it's mounted especially in hot seasons when you drive over 4+hours? I had the exact same fuel error last July. I suspect I'm not alone in this.

Is there a definitive fix to this? I'm thinking about epoxy'ing a small cpu fan on it with bunch of holes drilled out of its plastic casing.

Thanks for your post, I wasn’t even aware of this issue, and it does happen to more owners than we assume
I found a promising solution for the overheating, plug & play setup, manufactured in the US:

https://arcterminator.com/products/f...pnp-cooler-kit

Could be a viable and permanent solution, while being inexpensive.

I believe there is an updated version of the EKP module that is compatible with the s63 and when coupled with the terminator that @scd-1983 mentioned its supposed to help provide better fueling for the LP side.

Panda6 did a video on his X6M that might do a better job of explaining the project.

Might be worth carrying a spare one of these EKPS modules, save a lot of headache and easy to install carrying screw drivers.

thanks all for replies.

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...mw-16147411595

this is what I got last year which failed a couple days ago. It looks like the same unit as the module the guy in the video is installing.

I'm going to email arcterminator about a kit for this EKPS. Every fiber in me wants to do the mod and make the same trip to see if it'll no longer give issues. but it just costed me 2k in tow & 1k in busted bumper lip while getting on the tow bed, so I think I'm going to stick with my trusty e60 m5 for the long journeys!

F* that tow charge, 10 bucks a mile! I'd definitely get that fan for your temps there and much easier to fit than in that X6M under the seat.

yea that was painful but I was happy to pay it to get out of desert and get the car back home. sucked regardless!

I got reply from arcterminator, and the rep was very nice. He said ekps overheating isn't normal with stock pumps and thought perhaps my pump is failing or there may be issue with the pump basket in the tank--some hose
obstruction or regulator that may be making the pump work extra hard. I ordered new pump & basket kit from fcp and will replace everything. will also check power wire and ground to make sure the wires are okay. I'll do the cooling mod too. It looks like a nice piece, and I like having good customer support.

There's not much to go wrong with it after you have done all that, as you said its a b*tch for that happening in the desert and glad you're okay !
