F10 m5 problems vs f10 550i problems???
Guys I have an 11' 550i M sport and I'm getting tired of the issues with this car, I know some of you moved up from the 550 to the m5 and I want to know if the m5 has some of the same problems the 550 does?? I will list the issues I'm mostly concerned with, the reason I ask is when my warranty is up I'm getting rid of this car and was thinking to get an m5 since most of my upgrades for the 550 will transfer over to the m5 like wheels, spoiler, grills and such. I'm putting my 550 back to stock before I get rid of it, so I'll have all the custom parts left over.
If the m5 has its own set of issues please list them, you don't have to go into great detail. 1. Engine problems, my 550 has been to the dealer for customer care package where they replaced the vanos valves, timing chains, mass air meters, fuel injectors and other various parts. Burns oil, need to add a quart every other month. Can't reprogram DME for more power. 2. Battery issues, doesn't charge unless braking or coasting bmw recommends to replace the battery every year. BMW refuses to reprogramm the car to have alternater charge all the time like most other cars do. 3. Fuel pumps, mine were replaced under service bulletin, both hpfp and lpfp 4.cell phone connectivity problems, mine has to be manually reconnected everytime I get in the car and my bmw apps don't work. Most of these issues were taken care of by bmw but I had to have my warranty Co replace 2 shocks(dynamic handling pckg) battery plus oil and water lines to the turbos. I bought my 550 used and I've had all things happen in the first 6 months of owning the car, it had just turned 51500 miles when I received it. Thanks to anyone who has anything to add. Maybe this subject has been discussed already, judging from the response this thread is not getting I'll have to assume the M5 is a lesser piece of shit compared to the 550.

I wouldn't call any 5 series "pieces of shxt"
I had an X6 50i for 14 month prior to getting the F10M5. I had my share of issues/problems with the N63 engine, mine had less than 60k and was only 3 years old. The x6 had the customer care package, changed fuel pump, cleared numerous engine fault codes and resets, batteries that did not charge, transmission and 4wd failures etc. From what I have read, N63s are very different from S63 in terms of parts, expected usage and thus durability, as well since the engine is M build, the S63 is subjected to a lot harsher usage parameters at testing and quality assurance. My M5 had only been driven for 6months and all I can say is that I love everything about this car, and so far it had not failed in any way. I drive this car daily, from 30c to -20c, it has proven to be a car I can rely upon, as long as you are not being stupid about it. One thing I think you should keep in mind is that an M car is a package designed differently from the ground up. It is the whole setup that sets the car apart. Before my first M vehicle I was finding it difficult to believe. Once you own and live with your M car, you will begin to realize that you are not only buying a BMW with a more powerful engine, but a BMW that is SO different from its normal lineup that it should not even be discuss alongside with its normal offerings. I have never spent as much money in a vehicle before this car and I can say it is well worth every penny. Enough said? |

Well then, I knew my last comment would inspire you guys to give me the answer I was looking for, I knew I was going to get some flack for that. I meant no disrespect but I saw a lot of people reading my thread and I wasn't getting any responses to my query. My 550 is the best car I've owned but it's also had more problems than anything I've owned. I just wanted to know if there were any issues with the M5 since that is where I'm headed next, I guess I'll make sure I get one with a warranty like I did with the 550. Thanks for your responses and remember I'm still on your side.

I had a 2012 550xi that had multiple engine issues. Traded it for my current M5, which has been flawless. The Customer Care upgrade came out after I made the switch. So my experience is that the M5 has been a much better experience than the 550xi.
However, my new house is at the top of a hill and even with dedicated snow tires, I am having issues getting up the hill so even though I love my M5, I am considering switching to a X5M? Interested in a mint loaded SG/Black 2014 LCI? |

I'm guessing by your last statement you were being a little condescending in your attitude. I also knew it would bring the subhumans from thier cesspool and also confirms my suspicion that The Mighty M5 owners are a mixed bag of nice guys and trolls. You would be the latter???

Guys thanks for your input from those who responded in a nice manner, I just wanted to know if the m5 has issues. You m5 guys are a tough crowd, I was warned before I came here. I might just a GTR it's lighter and much faster (especially modded), I could careless about comfort mode or back massagers.

I had a 2013 550i. It was part of the customer care campaign for the n 63 engine in for 2011-2013 550, 750 and X5. There are a lot of issues related to that emigre. The M5 has a different engine and is not part of the campaign. I traded my 2013 550 for a 2015 m5 with CP and have not had any issues in 8500 miles. Any BMW from 2011-2013 with the n63 is a car to stay away even after BMW fixes the problems. Love the M5 and drives so much better than my 550. The GTR is faster off the line but watch the videos on a roll. Bye bye GTR. Plus the GTR is using old tech and older GTR's had their own issues. Good luck either way.

Eh, it's above average. Mine drinks oil.
I had a 2013 550 which I drove for 33k miles before turning it in and I had zero mechanical problems with the car. Sounds like OP got a lemon. My M5 has been flawless and approaching 7k miles already. |

Many wouldn't consider a car that drinks oil to be flawless... I know you can live with it, but it's annoying, disappointing, and not normal. For example, the Audi 4.0 TFSI engine in the Audi RS7 doesn't suffer from this problem, and neither does the engine in the Mercedes E63S.
