Good article I saw today on the N63.

Seems like we should heed the N63's problems as M5 owners as the battery and turbocharging systems operate the same way. I'm guessing M Division gave the M5 a larger capacity battery than the regular 5-Series due to the larger turbos and cooling systems on the M5 though.

In conclusion I think the take away here is that it is better to drive the car harder during Break-In and in general to charge the battery more.

When I took my car in a few months ago for the 10K mile service they replaced a battery and said it was an upgraded battery because of a recall. I had incurred no trouble from the battery but it got replaced.

Yeah me too Stealth. I couldn't imagine my battery dying all the time.

Not only has my battery not been replaced, but I don't use a battery tender, and I often don't drive my car for 3 weeks at a time. I have done maybe 3500 miles in the past year. So if this was a really weak area I would think I would have noticed it.

It's great BMW is over engineering and upgrading the battery nonetheless.

I only have about 9,000km on the car. It is parked for about 6 months each winter. No problems yet.

Dealer was going to repalce the battery this past summer as part of the replacement plan but had none in stock.

For those of you who got your battery replaced in your M5, I am wondering if M5's and M6's are included in this new BMW plan to just keep replacing batteries. I'm wondering if those of us who are still on their original battery can get a free replacement? Even if we are out of Factory Warranty. Hmm... Might have to call my SA about this.

I talked to my shop guy that did all the upgrades for my car, and they do put a new battery every time because of a emissions issue.

Now every battery is like 500-600$ BMW is spending that every time sounds kinda fishy...

This is more geared toward the n63 engine in 2011-2013 BMW's, 550, 750 and x5. Had the campaign done in my 550 and traded it in for a 2015 m5. The bimmerfest f10 forum has a stickies post with tons of details from owners ok this. Eseintlaly a bad design for the n63 engine. M5 has the n63tu which is not the same design and components. There are similarities but two different engines

Other than having your service advisor pull you VIN, I'm not sure. You could probably call them and see.

The problem is that only some of the issues with the n63 were fixed in the n63tu. Others were either improved but not completely fixed, or remained as they were. For example, the oil consumption problem and some heat-related issues.

There is a new n63tu2 where BMW addressed some of the remaining issues. For example, they improved the piston ring design to reduce oil consumption. They also improved the cooling system. This new engine is in the 2016 750i, and it will be in the 2017 550i and other upcoming models.

The M5 s63tu engine is based on the n63tu, not the new n63tu2. For example, it doesn't have the new piston ring design of the n63tu2.

Ditto, but I do have a tender; I just haven't used it on the M in over a year.
