Drove Audi S8 Today

I want to preface my comments by saying I only had an hour behind the wheel and I don't believe thats enough time to be able to appropriately critique any vehicle. I will leave ridiculous critiques to Car and Driver. LOL

My first thought was that Audi has certainly under rated the horsepower output. For a car that is approximately 200lb's heavier then my M5 it was just as quick. Steering was a little vague and the wheel felt far to thin in comparison to the M5. It handled nicely for a big car but not as competently as the Beamer. I respect the S8 and admire it's appointments but honestly think our cars have a nicer interior with the full leather package and better ergonomics.

Ultimately, the BMW M5 is still number 1 in my book but have to give the AUDI huge kudos. Love the Quattro and their MMI system.

Good to hear. Anymore input would be greatly appreciated by one person who is struggling with the M5 in an area with moderate winters and the need to make it to work regardless of the weather. M5 with snow tires vs S8 with snows...S8 interior really looks impressive.

Honestly, I have no idea why every review say Audi have great interior.
To me they all have the same ugly design, hard material, not very luxurious etc.
It just isn't comparable to the F10 let alone other models.

However, as a BMW fan, the BMW styling department left some points on the table. The body style of the new M% really could have used some more difference and masculinity. While the car likely drives like a mo fo, it's looks are certainly not its most appealing quality (from my perspective)

seems like a mixed msg to me - if you're a bmw fan, you appreciate that the M5's soul started and has continued as a Q ship. Unfortunately (maybe fortunately for you) there are no shortage (see this site) of aftermarket "look-at-me-I-can-look-like-a- modified-honda-civic-too" bits for folks who want the "more aggressive look"

Give me that car 100% as is. Please and Thank You.

When has the M5 ever been not subtle? Car looks tough as it is already. Every generation of the M5 has been aggressive in the minor touches. I'm glad this car isn't gaudy and ostentatious. The Audi S8 is much of the same.

Amen.

I still think E39 looks the best. Subtle and really does not scream "Look at me, Look at me".

I think F10 also does a better job than E60. E60 really have that "Look at me, I have 500 HP".

You are drinking the BMW Kool-aid.....this car does not in any way shape or form look ostensibly different from the 550....that was my main point. As a 47 yo business owner, I am cetainly not some BMW fan boy that is going to put "bolt on" kibbles and bits onto my car. Simply pointing out that at ~ $90K, this car should be more "distinct" in appearance. Clearly, to each his own, and this this is why they make both vanilla and chocolate ice cream.

Not much different, until you step on that GO pedal! I've always preferred the 'sleeper' approach to performance, and like flying under the radar until the need for a little display is appropriate. When the obvious performance machine is showing off a bit, it's so satisfying to be able to walk away from them and leave them wondering what the hell that was......?

This is my philosophy as well. Those fan boys can keep their roof spoilers all they want. Just adds drag.

I've driven both of the current versions within the last month.

I love both cars. The S8 is def bigger and I would compare it to the 750. The interior design and finish on the audi I feel is better..more cutting edge. The engine on both cars is superb.

The handling I give to the BMW. Both cars are great.

In what ways could they have made the M5 more distinct without making it look tacky? Wider fenders? The F10 is too wide as it is. Bigger intake scoops? They are freaking humongous. You are paying for the performance/luxury. If you want a flashy car that stands out, M5 certainly isn't for you. I am not drinking kool-aid, I'm just pointing out BMW M5 tradition of subtlety. Wait for the upcoming XF-RS for something "distinct"
