From 7 to 5

How is this car in the winter with premium snow tires? The lease on my 2012 750 xi is coming up soon and I need to decide whether to buy it out or move into a 2015 M5. I can get financing at 0.14% which is amazing.

F10 owners, please share you snow experiences in this beast. I love my x drive.

This is not a car for the snow regardless of the tires. I swap my wheels/tires out each season - 601s with Pirelli Sottozero for the winter and HREs with stock rubber for the summer - but would not consider driving any distance in the snow. Now the Pirelli Sottozero are more of a winter tire than a snow tire, but I would not advise having the M5 as your only car if you live where it snows.

Others will certainly disagree, but just my 2 cents.

I had Michelin Alpinas on my E90 M3 and got around great in them even in snow. The M5 with premium winter tires should be no different.

There is no way youl'll be able to compete rear drive with snow tires in snow as much as the Xdrive. I have owned both starting with rear wheel then going to X...
It is a big deal so much so that right now I'm actively looking for my next X5
( which I have traded in for my M5 e70 )
Now winter is so close and I'm not going to go out there without my X, no way

xdrive is not a big deal unless you intend on driving on unplowed roads. we did fine for decades in rear wheel drive cars as long as we had a good set of snow/winter tires.

In my experience an M5 on proper, deep treaded snow tyres will outperform an X drive on its normal run flat summer tyres. That's not to say you don't have to be careful in applying all that torque and power. Of course an X-drive on proper winter rubber wins hands down

Thanks for the feedback guys. I won't our lousy Canadian winter get in the way of getting into awesome M5. I'm working on a 2014 black on black with 24 000km for 80k CAD. It has the premium package.

Let's see how this plays out.

Decided to keep the 7. When the next generation comes with X-drive I will definitely be making the switch!

If your goal is just acceleration, then the new 750i xDrive M-Sport is pretty close with a 0-60 time of about 3.9 seconds. Obviously it won't match the M5 cornering, but it is pretty agile thanks to its 4 wheel steering. And of course you will have xDrive.

Since I have a E93 supercharged M3, it pretty much satisfies my need for speed. What caught my attention on the M5, is the ability to increase the horsepower to the 700's with a chip and exhaust work.

My view is that the additional horsepower is not really usable. This is a car where you can have wheel slip by flooring throttle at 70mph. It requires real skill to keep the car on the road while driving fast in cooler weather (and by cooler I mean under 60 degrees).

This is why the M5 needs an X drive variant.

Agreed the M5 needs an xDrive option to handle the horsepower to accelerate from low speeds and I'm betting the next gen M5 will have xDrive. However, the current M5 equipped with the 408M wheels and Pirelli performance winter tires has no problem handling snow and ice. From personal experience, I'll take M5 with winters over XDrive with all-seasons any day.
