Cracked Windshield
Guys -
My window got hit with a rock or something and now has a foot long crack going from the top down that has grown over the last week. Has anyone replaced their windshield before? Did you go through the dealer or third party? and do you know what all parts need to be purchased? Dealer is asking for around $1700 for parts & labor which include the windshield and rain sensor along with some minor parts. Looking at BMW Parts online, I can get a new OEM windshield for under $300 so I don't understand why the markup. Any advice is appreciated. My 13 F10 M5 does not have HUD nor Lane Departure.

I'm getting my windshield replaced in the upcoming days through my glass coverage. My ins co, Geico, is notorious for using 3rd party glass. They did it all the time with my past cars.
Interestingly, they state that they can only source OEM glass for my car, which has the HUD, but no Driver's Assist Pack. The projected time to get the glass, as they stated, is about a week in my area. When they replace my windshield, I'll chat it up with the guy who's doing the work for you.

sorry to hear! either way make sure you go OEM! i've read horror stories where insurances went 3rd party and BMW would not warrantee the work due to not the right adhesives or what not to seal the glass and sensors not working??

I just had the windshield replaced. GEICO used Safelite, as usual, but they showed up with OEM glass.
This is the estimated cash price quote, the actual invoice with the insurance discounted rate, and a zero balance. Note the markup on the quoted price. Makes your dealer quote look quite attractive in comparison : I hope this helps man.

Wow what a markup!!! The $1200 one is about right if I get the parts at wholesale from the dealer which they agreed too.
Thanks for posting that.

Yep just went through this, do a search there is a lengthy thread but in short Geico wanted me to use Safelite and wouldnt pay for dealer. After many discussions and arguments with Geico because I wanted OEM. I found out the dealer actually was going to use Safelite for the install anyway and Safelite uses BMW OEM glass as I was told an aftermarket replacement wasn't available with HUD lane departure etc. Safelite even picked one up at the local dealer so I didn't have to wait to get one shipped in.
Safelite did a great job all is OEM and no problems at all. The total cost was $992 compared to $1550 and $2200 dealer quotes with HUD and lane departure. |
