Battery coding

Guys my battery is shot now. Did any of you replace your battery at home then go to Bmw so they can code it.
Thanks

Hey man, sorry to hear it. On my previous BMW (E90) I had Sears automotive changed the battery but i instantly regretted it. It was Christmas lights in the dash with everything frozen. However, the Sears technician was able to code it properly. it did take him over two hours to input all the codes because he had to figure it all out from scratch. So my suggestion is - have the dealer change it or an indy who knows what they are doing.

Oh that's new, I didn't know you had to do coding if a new car battery is installed.

I always thought car batteries were plug and play......

"Coding" is only necessary if you are changing the size or rating of the battery, like from going from a 90ah to a 105ah.
You do however have to register the battery with Rheingold, Tool32, INPA, or another compatible software. It basically tells the charging system the battery is brand new and how to charge the battery.

Can this "register" process be done with the ESYS software used for coding?

It's my understanding that it cannot be done with E-Sys.
Most of the software is available for free. Look on the coding forums. INPA is probably the easiest to use for battery registration.

My car just gave me an "Increased Battery Discharge" warning yesterday. Car starts normally and every thing else seems to be running fine. For those that have experienced this how long do I have before this needs to be addressed? I have a work trip for the next week and unfortunately can not get the car to the dealer prior to leaving.

Try using a battery charger/conditioner and see if that fixes it. CTEK makes a few nice ones.

I had the same warning this week on my e90.

I only got 1 warning. Started the car fine, saw battery discharge warning. Drove it 20 minutes, parked, and it never started again. I was unable to get the charge over 50% with a borrowed battery tender, I gave up and towed it because it was stuck on the other side of town.

Soooo don't be suprised if you can't start it after your trip.

You need a quality charger designed for AGM batteries which has maintenance and reconditioning settings.
