Has BMW stuffed the US channel?
I don't know whether this is only in my neck of the woods, but every local dealer has several Ms in stock. I went in to do a test drive over the weekend and my dealer had 4 M5s (3 were sticks!) and 3 M6s. My SA told me that he couldn't get a production number for a custom order M6 and that BMW told them to sell what they had in stock! Crazy. I know for a fact that other dealers in the area are stuffed as well. Sounds like it may be a good time to negotiate.

They are very good and certainly happy to order you a "custom" M5/M6 . If you end up working with them talk to Emilly Galagher (sales manager), she's great to work with

There are 33 M5 and 29 M6 at dealerships in my area... My dealer says that some of his have been sitting for 4 months. He says there's a lot less interest in these cars than expected. Also, some of his cars are canceled customer orders.
BMW didn't "stuff the US channel"... These cars just aren't selling well based on what I heard from my dealer - I just chatted with my sales guy about this last week. |

Well here in Toronto I have heard that the M5 is moving well and production is being pushed out all the way to April for a slot. As per the M6 thats another story - they are just sitting there not moving an inch - I am sure the M6GC will change that.

I know of one dealer that's advertising $5000 off their in-stock M5's. I too am surprised at the lack of interest in the car.
My guesses: 1) Performance SUVs just continually becoming more popular than sedans in general, and especially at this price point. 2) S6/7 has beaten the M5 in at least one comparo and is $20,000 less. While the M5 is the better track car - I think people with a track focus are buying a GTR, M3, or 911 over an M5 - leaving the M5 kind of stuck in the middle perhaps. Not enough track performance vs other cars, and perhaps in many minds not as good as a daily-driver performance sedan as the S6/7. Remember that >50% of the sedans sold in the USA are AWD. Agree - I love the M5, have always wanted one so the decision was a no brainer. But at that price point, you have a ton of options especially if backseat and size isnt a factor. Also, I cant imagine many people are looking to get into an M5 in the dead of a pretty cold and freezing winter here on the east coast. For those enthusiasts, Oil pump and LCI possibility might make them hold off til Fall for the 2014s.

An update to my dumb comment above - as you can see from my signature I am trying to sell my car because of a move. I am ultra surprised at the # of used M5s avaialable for sale. I remember with E60 you were lucky if there 2 or 3 at any one time. Today I log on and there is 8!!! These are big #s for Canada!

My guess most M5 owners it's a second or third car, and with a 100k price point new taxes in 2013 makes it interesting. Also winter time is not the best time to buy a 560 HP car, and park it for the winter. I would by all over again hands down, and it's still a good buy for 100k because they next price point for an upgrade is 150k! I'm keep hearing other options, and would like to know what they are at 100k new of course not used please compare apples to apples. Before the options start flying I would never by a stripped down Porsche(:

Perhaps it's time for BMW to bump up (support) the lease residuals a bit... they've got the 550i/ix at 60% (3yr/15k/0.00130) while M5s are at 49% (3yr/15k/0.00130).
With some better residuals I'd consider a lease before the LCI. |

I dont see BMWFS doing this in the near term. They are basically taking the risk and shifting it onto the customer with the lower residual. They are hedging their bets on the fact that the value of the m5 will not hold after 36 months. They know worst case they will get their 49% and then a few extra points when they turn around and the dealer sells the vehicle.
