Wont rev past 4KRPM when stationary.

OK Chaps,
I pointed out on another thread, that i noticed my car wont rev past 4k rpm, when stationary. Has anyone else noticed this ?, and i wonder if its an engine protection system ?. Another chap mentioned his car will rev out, so i wonder if its a UK car thing ?, thankyou, regards, SIMON.

It's only to protect the engine after the start when it isn't under load. If you wait a few minutes it will rev above 4k and if you put it in gear it will also rev above 4k.

Thanks Stealth,
Car was well up to temp, before i was mucking around with this, but i think i had just restarted the engine, to put it in the garage, so you may be correct.

Switch off traction control and you can rev it higher.

Just done a bit more testing on this today, and my car will not rev past 4k rpm, whatever settings i try, and well up to temp. I wonder if this is an engine protection mode UK cars have ?. Could any other UK owners have a try at this, to see if their car is the same ?. Im not bothered by it, just more interested as to why this is, regards, SIMON.

I have read on other forums about this, the early cars were not restricted in the same way, but when you update the software, they are also then restricted. I believe its an eco measure at least in Europe, not sure if its the same anywhere else?

I think if the car is in park it won't rev past 4k but if you put it in neutral you should be good to go!

Same problem here in Brazil. Before the revision, the car works normal when stationary. After last oficial revision, my car do not pass 4k when stationary, doesn't matter what I do. This is normal ?

When I first got the car I could rev it out to the redline when stationary. I have an early model - dec 11 production. Since I have had the software updated to deal with a misfire issue I cannot rev past a hard limited at 4000 rpm when stationary.

And my HUD always defaults to non-M view which is very annoying (since the update).

And the auto stop start icon colour changed from green to blue - strangely.

Yep, same here. Won't rev past 4k even after engine up to temp. Tried with traction off and not in park too. I'm not at run in service stage yet.. Exhaust sounds like a milk float..

It does rev above 4k 100% and I don't wanna say I.am sure for all of you but keep at or like sometimes it takes me revving it mkre than 20 times with all below 3k and suddenly it opens up and I will be really surprised it's set up differently else where!

In Neutral
Parking off
A few minutes after driving and even if hot if engine off and back on immediately resets this revving this to from the beginning! !

Key is keep at it

I don't have the problem except while it's in it's little 1200 rpm warmup. It won't rev past 3k for me during that time. Once that is past (it drops to 800 rpm idle), I can run it to 5000 easily. That is how I do the cold start videos while it's in park.

Why would anyone want to rev an engine past 4k rpm in park?

Very strange.. I dont know.. My BMW Dealer told me that this is a "Bauteileschutz"... a protection for the engineparts or something...

When i made coldstart, then i dont put on the gas. Once the car is finish with the coldstart, then i select the 1 gear and drive normally from park.

When the engine is warm, so after 20-30min then i have tried park to rev about 4K RPM.

But with DSC OFF, handbrake off, Neutral, sportplus, no idea but it does not work...

@ careful driver...
Because i drive an ///M Car. And i want listen the sound from this beautiful car, not often but also in park. I drove bevor the M5 F10 an 2007 LCI M5 E60. And with this it was never a problem...

I Dont understand BMW why they made this. Because its a truly M-Car and not so crappy shit...
