AvInch, what's the biggest difference that makes it less bouncy as some have said. Also it would appear they are deeper, but are they also larger in diameter even if just fractionally so?

Old one has different depths left and right. Has one piece that moved up and down that is annoying.

New one has same depths left and right. No up/down piece, it's designed better/looks better and key holder is redesigned too.

At one point, BMW used to reference a park release mechanism under the cupholder assembly. It was to be used in the event of a total power loss and not being able to release DCT out of park. I take it that this is no longer there?

If that is the case, how do we flatbed the car when it has a total battery failure? I guess that would also apply to the parking brakes as well.

I didn't look, but it has to be there as it's mentioned in the M5 technical PDF.

Off topic but maybe you guys can help me on this:

I have a weird incident with that key holder.
The day I picked up my 14 M5, I left a key in the holder then locked the car (2nd key was on my wife's purse at the moment). Then I went back to my car and couldn't unlock it (my wife wasn't in the remote range) and I saw my M5 key on the key holder.

After that experience on the 1st day with my M, I stopped using the key holder.
Does it suppose to do that? (unable to unlock with a key on the slot)

LOL I've done the same thing. I used the Remote app to unlock the car.

Here you go:

Before you start, what build date and model year M5 do you have?

When you have 1 key and you leave it in the car, the doors will not lock.

Your car locked with the key inside because it detected a key outside of the vehicle. Then when you went back to it, no key outside the vehicle = no access to unlock.

The key holder I only use when I'm forced to valet the car. Any other time I always leave it in my pocket.

You could probably find a photo on google. But the cup holders are different depths and it has this plastic piece at the front, closest to the DCT.. it's annoying and gets in the way.

The LCI is about equal depths, no plastic or other moving parts besides the lid, and it just has a cleaner and more simple design.

Makes much more sense.
I will try it with only key at home to test it out.
Thanks!

open your driver side door. there will be 2 labels. One of them has built date like: 11/13 on the top right corner if I'm not mistaken.

You can try, but based on your build date, it's not guaranteed that this retrofit will be easy to retrofit. It is however very much possible as another member has successfully done it.

My M5 is a 03.13 build (so therefore the DIY is based on a 03.13 M5).

Note: the steering and suspension changes mentioned above are not the same ones that come with the Competition Package.
The changes mentioned above are mechanical changes. There are also a number of cosmetic and design changes some that are not noticeable. One of them being the area below the cup holder.

Again, the retrofit is still possible, just not as easy as mine. That other member needed to dremel out some material and then was able to install it without issue.
