Arkapovic issues - BMW experience

My 2016 F10 M5 came with the PDC installed Arkapovic mufflers. The car was a long time sitter on the dealer lot and I got my CA to give me great deal a couple of years back.

Fast forward to last week and the muffler starts making a horrendous rattle noise on cold starts. My wife has been on a 2 year tear with me on this car - she absolutely hates the muffler - her claim, it wakes her up in the mornings and is convinced our neighbors will report me for noise violations So you can imagine her reaction to the rattles.

Took it to the dealer yesterday (Classic BMW in Plano TX) - the SA just called to say the flaps have gone bad and BMW wants to replace the entire muffler system - WTF I guess. Car will be in the shop for 5 days till they get the part in and installed. Will be interesting to see what I get back.

There are a lot of similar stories about Akra exhausts either developing rattles or. Racking at the welds. Pretty poor given the cost of the system and it would put me off buying a secondhand one as I'd want dealer warranty cover on it just in case. Hope you get it sorted

Yup - that is what the dealer is saying. Flaps went bad - they could jerry rig a fix but decided to change the entire muffler.

20K miles in my car and this is the first problem I have had with the car - so no complaints at all.

I had no idea you could code out the cold start deafening noise. My wife has already instructed the next M has to have the base quieter muffler.

Does anyone have coding info for stock ECU's to remove cold start? I have just the regular CP exhaust and frankly the cold start noise is annoying. It isn't cool, it's ugly and embarrassing. I'm fine with driving on the stock exhaust and have no interest in aftermarket.

This is the first I ever read of an issue w/ Akra. I've had mine for some time with zero issues and love the exhaust tone.

Zero issues for me as well till the rattle developed at 19K miles. Got the car back with the new muffler installed - back to the usual loud growl.

Did they replace the the muffler only or the whole set up?
Also which side of the muffler?

I had the same issue on my 2016 M5 Comp. Bought it off lot new in CA in May of 2016 with no issues, other than being really loud (just the way I like it). Started to get the rattle a year later. I contacted Akrapovic direct. It is a known issue with the exhaust valve damper linkage. I could easily isolate the noise (wearing a glove) while the car was running. I really only heard the noise when I was down shifting but I always drive in manual mode so I heard it all the time. Took it to Classic Plano twice. They tried to tweak and adjust the linkage to no avail. On the third visit they replaced the entire exhaust system. I made an appointment and it only took a half day. Worked great for another 6 months and now I'm starting to hear the sound again but not as bad as the first exhaust. The car is a lease and it's up in May of next year so I'm not going to jack with it again. I am planning on getting the F90 comp and I'm seriously considering deleting the M Sport exhaust (if that's an option).

We are brothers man! My lease is up in June 2019 and I am going the F90 route as well. If the rattle develops, I'll just live with it.

I am still on the fence with the OEM wheels on the F90 including the competition package. They don't wow me at all. Have to see where I land. Who is your go to dealer in the metroplex? I go down to BMW of Beaumont near Houston for all my BMW purchases although we got my wife's X5 from the new Sewell dealership in Grapevine.

if the rattle is caused by the flaps, the simple solution for those of us out of warranty is simply to do the flap mod and keep them open.
