Break-in service done early

So I took the m5 for a state inspection at bmw since I purchased the vehicle out of state. Bmw recommended the car go in for the breakin service since it pops up in the computer, however, the vehicle only has 260 miles. Is this a problem going through break-in prematurely.

Over the long run, likely no issues would result, needless to say the preference is to wait for 1200. If you still have a choice, I would pull it back and wait until 1200. Which dealer is this? I am very disappointed to hear a SA offered it, he should know better. I've had very good experiences with Rudy or Brent @ BMW of Alexandria. (heard lots of bad stories with Fairfax, however)

In the E9X M3 world, we've had a variety of break-in experiences, and to date, not 1 issue I can recall attributed to "improper break-in".

Our experiences range from:
1. past 1200
2. before 1200
3. drive it like I stole it
4. baby it
5. structured schedule (combo of hwy and various speed roads)

They all didn't matter. But at the end of the day, if you have a choice, why mess with a schedule as recommended by BMW engineers, right?

I typically go to BMW of Alexandria but figured this was state inspection so just went to the nearest BMW which is in Sterling. The service manager said it popped in there computer that the service is due. Tried to stop them from doing it but the technician was already draining the oil. I told the service manager that it was too early but again said that
was what they have due for service. Now I guess I can drive the car hard.

Believe it or not there is a lot ot do with the M5 rear diff. Potential for early noise development that will not be bale to be corrected without major service. Not to mention various engine items. I had this same discussion with several people when mine was new. Far better to wait for the 1200 miles. It comes quick enough. Also have to consider that when you sell it the next buyer will see it was done if service records are pulled. I perosnally would take issue if I were the buyer.

My 2 cents only. But would suggest waiting. Expensive car to let lack of patience cause potential trouble.

I wish I did but the SA told me the technician done engine oil and diff. Was upset with the fact that they did it early for me since I didnt want to get it done. I just came in to get a state inspection.

Ask the regional rep to approve having this done, again, at 1200miles. If BMW won't pay for it, pay for it yourself and go elsewhere.

Yes, I will definitely get the service done again at 1200. Hopefully they will cover that.

+1 and don't drive the car much above 5K RPMs as instructed. What most techs have no clue about is that when the service light is turned off the software automatically "unlocks"" the car without the need for any software flash, and gives you full hp. There is a slight automatic restriction during break in to keep you form abusing the car.

I am sure we can go back and forth on this. I researched it myself and got the info from Germany. Maybe it is incorrect. If you know otherwise please do share.

This exact thing happened to me. Without telling me, they did my 1200 mile service at 250 miles. I was pissed.

Supposedly, the actual time for the service depends upon driving conditions. For example I made many short trips, rather than long drives to break the car in.

Regardless, I got the service manager to agree to give me a free oil change at 1200 miles. I would recommend you do the same.

This is good to know. The 250 miles I have done were all short trips as well. The SA said I can take it in again at 1200. Hopefully they hold their word.

I was told "Launch Control" is the only thing locked out.
