Opti-Coat

I just picked up my new '14 M5. I have seen a lot of guys talk about having Opti-Coat applied to their car. Is this really a better option than my usual paint sealant and wax options. If I do Opti-Coat, should I still continue to wax?

Way better. Won't need to wax again. Also it will make your car a lot easier to clean. The hydrophobic properties of Opticoat compared with wax, are like comparing the hp properties of an M5 to a 518i. It changes the game. It also lasts a long time - there are many cars here who applied it in 2008 and it is still going strong.

Opticoat is the way to go. No more wax needed. Although it does attract more dirt and some have applied a coat of https://detailersdomain.com/SONAX-Po...ld-_p_814.html

Do you think Opti Coat makes full service car washes more acceptable to use? Do you recommend also waxing the car for extra shine?

I wouldn't use a brush carwash. But Opticoat does pretty well with touchless car washes because it is so good at repelling water. Further Opticoat can withstand the chemicals in a touchless car wash whereas wax gets wiped away leaving your paint exposed.

The only thing you've got to worry about with touchless car washes and Opti-Coat is drying the water and soap off quick enough. If any water or soap doesn't get wiped off, it will stain on top of the Opti-Coat. This is what I am going through right now. My rear bumper has some moderately bad soap stains on it from so many washes. I have tried to wipe and clean it but the stains won't come out of the Opti-Coat. Today I tried to Clay Bar it and it helped somewhat. Tomorrow I am going to polish and then apply another layer of Opti-Coat and then maybe wax after that.

You really don't have to wax your car with Opti-Coat. In fact if you do, the wax will not stick on as good as it would if you waxed your regular clear coat. You can still wax on top of the Opti-Coat, but it will come off easier and won't last as long. I'm going to try a little wax for the first time soon a think. I just hate how the bumper got stained from the soap. It's especially noticable on my black color paint.

That's true but you can always use this.

I don't use touchless myself but mainly because I have a clearbra and the installer said to avoid touchless in case the jets cause issues with adhesion.

Thanks Stealth. I will give it a try if after I polish it and the soap stains still don't come out.

This is what I use to prevent water spots on my opti coat: http://www.autogeek.net/deluxe-filter-system.html

Also use opti clean and opti quick detail.

Just put the new opti glass on but not enough experience in rain to give a verdict. Little bottle appears to be able to do 3-4 windshields: http://www.autogeek.net/optimum-opti-glass-coating.html

CQuartz finest is my preference, but they are similar treatments...both are great. I think opticoat lasts longer. CQuartz looks better - a little more glossy.

You gotta go waterless wash system at home. Time to give up the gas station car washes :-/

Two bucket wash. You will need to buy Optimum No Rinse from www.detailing.com and watch the YouTube video.

Yep, goes right on top. Won't last as long on the film, but I did the exact same thing.

Who applies Opticoat or CQuartz in Massachusetts/Rhode Island/Connecticut? Is there a local detailer?

I wouldn't bother. Apply it to the non clearbra panels. On the clearbra apply Sonax polymer net shield.

You don't need Opticoat on the clearbra since they have similar properties in terms of water repellency. Opticoat would diminish the self healing feature of your film.

BTW the best self healing film now is Suntek PPF-C. Used it for a year now and it seems to heal better and faster than Xpel.

Are you saying to put the sonax polymer net shield on the clear bra to protect from bird crap, dead bugs etc? I want to do that. It's hard to always keep the car clear of this stuff between washings.... Thanks for the help!

I polished the areas on my M5 where there were soap stains and heavy water spots. The polishing did the trick and took it all right out. I applied another layer of Opti-Coat and then put a layer of wax on top of that. It should hold up fine from now on. I think I'll try that net shield stuff next.

Where can one buy Opti-coat, I assume you can do it yourself (like waxing)?
