Gas Guzzler Question F10M5
Hey...did a quick search, however, came up empty.
Does anyone know how often one pays a gas guzzler tax? Is it only once at the time of purchase/lease that's baked into the MSRP (1300)? or is it every time you renew the registration? If so, what's the amount? 1300 every 2 years? |

Typically a 1 time thing when you buy the car new.
I haven't heard of anyone (state level) implementing a yearly tax under the "gas guzzler" heading, but I am not all knowing and people will look for money where they can find it. :-) |

I agree with johntomferg. At least in Florida it's only charged once when you buy the car new.
I think that its a federal thing. The manufacturer is charged because the car doesn't meet the average fuel economy requirements for it's class so they pass the buck. It's got nothing to do with registration of the car. But whose knows how things work in crazy California? |

https://www.epa.gov/fueleconomy/gas-guzzler-tax http://www.autoblog.com/2014/07/24/c...zler-tax-list/ What is commonly referred to as the "Gas Guzzler Tax" (GGT) is a tax imposed by the US government on certain cars pursuant to the Energy Tax Act of 1978. The IRS collects the specified tax where due from the car manufacturer or importer. The car manufacturer or importer in turn often seeks to recover the tax it has paid from the first consumer purchaser, but this is not required under the law. |
