Saw a nice 70-200 f4L IS on CL tonight in Chicago. $950. Still think it would be worth it to pony up a bit more for a refurb.

My dream team is a 24-70 f2.8L and a 70-200 f4L IS. Need a salary cap of a couple grand for that team, though.

Unfortunately the way pricing is going it is more of a fantasy.
I can just about sell the 100 2.8 for as much as it was new. A friend of mine bought the 70-200 2.8IS for 1700 USA new.
Remember the refurbs have that short 90? day warranty. If you want that 60D then look into the Canon loyalty program and buy a POS Canon PS thats broken.

The 1D4 is currently unobtanium. I guess I'm going to keep waiting and this is as good an excuse as any to buy an exhaust for my car in the meantime.

That said, shooting 8 megapixels is getting tiresome. I really want more resolution. I did a shoot with a cyclist today and I could not crop as far down as I wanted to because I was simply running out of photo.

Sounds more like you need 1.4x or 100-400 or a big prime. If you have to crop so much as you end up with that issue more pixels do not necessarily help.

This was a pretty cool project...

The picture was made last night using hand-held flashes and flashlights. When the camera shutter was open, about 1,000 volunteers painted the building with their flashes and flashlights during a timed exposure. The goal was to produce an image with even, shadowless light. This photograph was shot with a Nikon D3X with a 14 mm lens. The shutter was open for 15 seconds and the aperture was set at f11 at ISO 200. RIT

haha, i think if the photographer had even chosen a different angle on the building it might have been more interesting, like the multi coloured blocks on the left side of the building.

I also think, if they had just raised the ISO and left the shutter open longer, they could have gotten the same amount of light for the most part considering how much light fall off there was on the equipment people were using, probably barely made a difference.

I'm sure a few of you have done this, but I just experimented with putting my 50mm lens in front of my kit lens reversed. Poor mans macro lens!

^ nice pics. Yeah, I've done that before, but I feel like the dedicated macro lens does a better job (at least in terms of sharpness).

Btw, I'm planning a trip for Memorial Day weekend (driving distance only)... and I've narrowed it down to two places: Boston and Nashville. Of course I'll bring my camera along, but I was wondering if you guys suggest going to one city over the other?

Boston is supposed to have ridiculous amounts of history, but is also supposed to be ridiculous to drive around in.

Tennessee is always just a place i've driven through to get somewhere else

I want to make my way to Boston some time soon as it seems very neat to me.

Yeah, there's definitely a lot to see in Boston. I just feel like for the short amount of time we'll be there, it'll be kind of hectic and not very relaxing. Getting around the city isn't easy with a car, and it'll definitely be more expensive of a trip overall.

I've been to both places before, but never really toured the cities.

Yeah, that's one thing i hate about how i've been doing my road trips, when i find a city that's donig nothing for me, i can move on quickly, but when i come across a city that stands out and is fun, I don't give myself enough time.

Let us know which you decide, and we'll be waiting for lots of pictures!!!

Boston. If you're going to stay in the city, paaahhhk the caaahhhh and take the T to travel around.

Or instead of Nashville, think about Kentucky horse country. It's gorgeous this time of year and you can usually get into the tracks free and get great pics of them training horses. Also, Mammoth Caves National Park is in that area. Well worth a trip. Might a bit crowded on that weekend, though.

start with 1, i'm not really sure there's a need for 2 ever, unless you find that the one your originally buy isn't long enough.

Great lens.

Do you already have a 70-200mm L? I'd recommend one of those first, but the 135mm prime is really good at what it does. It's also great at macros with extension tubes and a 1.4x or 2.0x TC attached.

yes, i have the 70-200 F4 as well, it`s a great lens, and i`m learning to appreciate it more and more every time I use it.

I`ve seen a few shots with the 135L and i just love the way it handles the contrasts and bukah and such. And i really want to test it out with portrait work to see how it handles for me.

I also want to have that little bit more flexibility with indoor shooting with a longer focal length, and it`s half the price of upgrading to the 70-200 F2.8

and as you said, if i pick myself up a 1.4 and 2.0tc, i have a whole lot of room to play with, and still maintain the auto focus and still a decent fast lens
