M5 is drinking oil I believe.
Is anyone else experience this. Since new. 1000 km so 625 miles I've had to out 1 litre of oil in and now at 4000 km I've put in basically 1 litre every thousand. Should I be concerned? The dealership said the engine is built pretty loose but I've had 335's amg Benz and Audi s4 and none of those cars ever burn more than 1 litre or quart every 5000-10000km. Anyone have similar experiences Should I drive the car some more or take it into the dealership and maybe get an engine check for this issue. I've done the proper break in procedure but maybe I should of drove it hard. Any thoughts, opinions or input would be greatly appreciated. |

For me, that's too much. The engine is not "built loose". There's something wrong, and I'd be looking for someone to fix it or replace the motor.
There is some empirical evidence that a harder break in results in less oil consumption. It is said it's due to sealing of rings which occurs during the first 50 miles or so. I did a hard break in. I'm only at 2500 miles, but I have not had to add any oil.

another oil burning thread ?
Mine is burning 1 litre / 1000 - 1200km. I now have 27,500km on the clock. I go in to my dealer to top up every time @ no charge. They practically know what I need every time I go in and pop my hood up |

I heard the first top up is free everytime, I'm gonna get this sorted out cause where the heck is all this oil going beside being burnt up? Like turbos and intercoolers must have a ton of oil all over them.

actually, there is a TS bulletin that say burning that kind of oil is totally acceptable ... within the specification of BMW.
I tried your suggested route and I am told it's normal and no worry, it is totally under warranty if the whole thing blows up. After hearing that .... I am not going to stick around when the factory warranty is about to expire ... car is going to be traded in / get rid of by around the 3rd year (latest) which will leave the warranty for the next owner with about 1 year or so remaining. |

Why do you guys go to the dealer for oil top offs? I have boxes of oil for all my M/AMG in my garage and keep a bottle in the trunk.
Takes 1 minute at most. Last time I had to add oil was at a heat game. The light never comes on when I get home, always when I'm 60+ miles away from home.

Oil consumption also depends on how you drive the car. If you push it when cold or push it often, it will defiantly eat more oil.
I followed break-in but did not baby the car. I think I am adding a quart every 3,000mi. My E60 M5.. I followed same break-in, and I added oil every 7,000mi. Break-in method is the most controversial topic ever. There was a SIB on the N63 motor in regards to oil consumption. The N63 engine turbos were getting a ton of blow by. There is no SIB on the M5. Oil consumption varies for everyone here. From low extreme to high extreme.
