Hello all,

I've had my 2013 M5 39k miles, non comp for about a month now. Been smiling since I left the dealership

I'm going to start upgrading the car to preserve the lifespan, and increase some performance.

I already purchased a b2bumper 3rd party warranty

Got a nice uniden R3

Here's what a I plan to do:
- stage 1 tune, *any recommendations I'd really appreciate* just a lot of info out there, kind of overloaded, just want a simple stage 1 and

- Some sort of dct tune to make the car a little friendlier 1-3rd gear. Not sure if there are stage 1 and DCT packages out there or separate

- CarPlay module install (gotta drive about 100 miles to Ontario to do this, I don't trust any techs here in WNY to open my baby like that, and I can't have a car without CarPlay hehe)

- Possibly new exhaust tips

Anyways, since I purchased a pre LCI 13' what are the recommended upgrades? I'd really appreciate specific parts and any advice. Coils, spark plugs etc.

Thank you all very much

To my knowledge, tunes would shorten the lifespan of the car, not “preserve it”.
Bolt-ons would preserve the car more than a tune. I don’t have a tune myself so I cannot chime in on the reliability of one. Others with tunes should hop in on this topic.

Yes I see your point, I guess I could have worded it more correctly, looking for advice on a tune, and also on the other handbparameters I can take to preserve the life of the car. Coils etc. whatever tips you might have.

Thank you!

I also have a '13. I'm running a stage one tune from BPM. It's amazing, highly recommend it. As for muffler tips, I have a set from burger tuning (.com)

I'm on the fence between BPM and Openflash. Openflash being a bit cheaper and lots of happy customers, but the latest posts on the thread has me a bit concerned.

What coils are you using? Stock?

🙏

I've had the BPM Stage 1 flash for over two years now with not one hiccup. He is a little more expensive but I've been very happy with the tune. The only change I'd make is to lower the boost in the first two gears, but I'm moving on to a F90 and hoping for better traction. Stock coils with plugs gapped to .022" in a pre LCI 2013 M5.

I hear good things about methanol injection being good for engine longevity....

As I understand it, Steve Dinan is no longer with the company he originally founded under his name, and now works with Carbahn Autoworks on a OBD tune for the F10 M5. I've had a number of tuned vehicles in the past and I look for much more than just peak figures on an uncorrected dyno when comparing tunes.

The Carbahn tune speaks to a couple of salient points such as why they did what they did, and specifically, about not changing things that will result in a sacrifice in durability. If I were to do a tune today, this is the one I would be leaning towards.

The Carbahn tuner is the same hardware as the open flash tablet and Open Flash makes their tunes for them that Carbahn can tweak.

Ty for the replies guys, I guess I can skip on coils for now. BPM tune is what I'm most likely going to go for, not sure if it justifies an extra $800 over the Openflash but I'll make it a game time decision.

Just got bimmertune gonna play around with some settings, any suggestions on a DCT tune, or any other not so grand mods I can do to make the car a bit more friendly to drive at >40 mph?

Bootmod3 is great and not too expensive

you can get stage 1 and a step colder plugs,

you should also do grill intakes, they will give you a little more hp and nice sound

what do you mean bit more friendly at 40mph?

I bought mine in dec 2012. I had the piggy back once it came out and ran it until the tunes started floating around. mine been tuned 99% of its life. I've got almost 130k miles on my car and it shows no signs of slowing down. It comes down to how much tune you want, how you drive your car, and how well you take care of your car.

Don't replace coils until you have to. Plus, you have warranty let them pay. I would be careful with tunes only because your warranty company can decline servicing your car. My question to you is how long are you planning on keeping your car? I treat my car as if I'm willing to keep it for min 10 years so first thing I did was change out all the fluids. I don't have an aftermarket warranty btw

If you get a tune just be prepared to buy an aftermarket clutch pack. I got a BPM stage 2 at 45k miles and the clutch started slipping after maybe 100 miles.

Going with the stage 1 for now, not sure if I'd need more HP in the future, over 600 would be more than enough (for now )

About to pull the trigger tomorrow on bootmod3, CarPlay module is on back order for another few days.

Ty everyone!

You can always do some simple things like zip tie the muffler valve open and cheap thing like recode the car with a app like bimmercode ect, i have oft v1.2 and 2.0 both are good

Unless you plan on upgrading your clutch pack ($2,600 part + labor), i would request a detuned map to stay around 600 - 640 wtq. Clutches will start slipping after that and even around that depending on how much wear your clutch already has. Also, the c-rods are only good for around 680/700 with WOT. you can definitely run that power, but plan on doing a lot of maintenance if you drive it consistently hard.

It's all about what you want. I bought my F10 M5 because I wanted an upgrade in power from my previous car (FBO e90 M3). With a stg1 dinan tune, this car is useless in the first 3 gears and on the highway from a roll, it's fast enough for me. Maybe someday I'll step up to stg 2 (DP's, Intake an tune) plus clutches but for now, I'm pretty happy w/ the stg 1 dinan piggy back, which prob isn't adding as much power as your standard reflash.

Pulled the trigger on the stage 1 BM3, great add on, zero regrets, car pulls like a champ. Had a misfire on cylinder 4 so just replaced coils and plugs, went 1 step colder NGK gapped at .022, car is great!

Bought an eBay diffuser, didn't fit, returner and purchased one from some tuning site, looking forward to installing it. Only took about 10 minutes to take off the diffuser so super easy.

Next upgrade is probably suspension, car is a bit bumpy, want a more comfy ride. My Q7 (winter car) rides much much nicer, I don't like feeling "too much" of the road I guess. But coming along fantastic

I would never mod any car. It causes sleepless nights. It brings on cold sweats just thinking of the next drive. Leaves your right foot in a permanent angle that was in excess of xxx digits. leaves your bank account in a downward spiral. But in the end you can always say I have a badazz M5. Hope this helps.
