626PS rumoured in the new M5, as well as AWD

German magazine AutoBild ran an article on the new G30 5-series:

http://f10.5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1023826

The article's final paragraph says that the M5 will get 626PS and optional AWD...

Sounds promising. Too bad there's no mention on the type of engine. I'm holding my breath for a new V-10.

It says 626 PS. Is that 626 HP or 617 HP upon conversion? Not sure...

The 2017 Porsche Panamera Turbo S looks like it will be 700HP including hybrid assist. Who knows where the AMG competitors end up? We know where the new Hellcat series is slotting in (707 HP) and that's a 2014 car.

700HP is the new 500HP. I would be surprised if marketing conscious BMW would come out that far under the new Panamera S target.

What M branch may have been planning for a year or two ago may now be underrated for the emerging high-end sedan market (unless you get to the same place or better with dramatic weight savings).

If that is true that a lot of the competitors will be bringing their sedans to around the 700hp mark, then I'm willing to bet that the weight of those sedans are still going to around the 4,500lbs range while BMW will have less horsepower but will be around the 4,000lbs range.

And I would much rather have a bit less power and less weight

Aboslutely concur with this analysis. Even with the weight savings, I feel BMW will keep the HP inline with their cohorts.

And of course lets not forget the hard to brake ecu. They can't leave that out of the package.

Less weight and a better power to weight ratio is the best way for BMW to go ...... Please.

Less weight and more power is the best way to go.. At least 300 pounds less.

I'm hoping for smaller V8 twin turbo with electric motors - e.g. a 3.8TT V8 Hybrid.

If it isn't that, then I'd want a 4.0TT V8 with electric turbos.

The article mentions a weight loss of around 100kg (220lbs). That's not specificially for the M5, but a general weight loss for the G30 model.

Interesting that the base G 5-series is losing 200+ lbs while the new 7-series is losing 400+ lbs...and yet I think the starting weight is not dissimilar (by recollection).

Other than the i-brand, the new 7-series appears to be where they want to really show off next-gen weight savings and we would need to hope that the M5 is part of that wave (not just 200-ish lbs, which I think would be disappointing). Statements from Albert Biermann of M suggest that the M5 will be part of this much larger effort, but we'll see I guess. Maintaining my optimism...

Good point! The current 7 series is about 300lb lighter than 5 series (according to BMWUSA 750i is 300lb heavier than 550i and the same thing for 740i vs 535i); So if they reduce 400lb for 7 series and only 200 lb for 5 series then the difference between them will be just 100lb !!!!

I have plenty of power. Shave the weight.

I'm okay with AWD, but would prefer it be optional. Finally, I would like more exterior styling distinction from a non-M.

Exactly, which is why I prefer the old adage --- there is no replacement for (engine) displacement.

As I think more about this, I agree. If you're BMW and you were used to having the class-leading car for years...and then the competition eventually became very intense...and you still need to worry about the marketing campaigns (horsepower for horsepower comparisons) why would you not target 700HP and 10% weight savings ignoring AWD (optional feature)? TT V10 plus hybrid or TT V8 plus hybrid could both probably get you there (700 HP) although the thought of a TT V10 has a certain cache marketing-wise for sure. The key could be what kind of fuel economy both set-ups could get to as M likely has to keep raising the bar in fuel economy too (let's be realistic). Hitting the 700 HP less 10% lbs target likely gets you back the undisputed title and greater profitability in the segment. Isn't that the logical final path on this? I think THAT car is a big seller (relatively speaking). I know I would buy it.

It's hard to put 700 hp on the pavement efficiently without awd. 0-60 times would be behind competitors.
